Anyone been through/supported someone through radiotherapy?

It seems likely that MIL will be going through radiotherapy sometime in the new year. I'm not close with MIL, but she only has her sister and us nearby in terms of family, and I'm sure she's stressed and anxious about it.

I've never been around anyone whose been through it, so I was wondering what the likely side effects are and what kind of support she might need.

I'd thought of someone going with her to appointments, and maybe making some freezer meals. But do people generally feel up to eating? Should I maybe put the meals into small portions so if she feels up to something she can just have a bit?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Is that the same as radiation?

My dad went through that a few years ago. I would skip the freezer meals. The only thing he ate during that time were fish sandwiches from McDonalds. I guess it was the only thing he could tolerate. I'd wait to see what she feels she can eat and make or but whatever that is.

She'll have a lot of down time so new reading material, puzzles, apps, music, movies could be helpful. He also got burns on his skin from it and went through a lot of lotion. (He used the lay it on thick from B&B) He spent a lot of time watching tv and lying around. I think giving her company if she wants it could also be nice.

Every person is different so take this FWIW. A good friend of mine had to do this and he had really great days and really bad ones. I agree with PP about the food. My friend wouldn't eat anything but pepperoni pizza and yogurt, for whatever reason those were the two things that didn't taste weird. He's told me in hind sight that the 2 things I did for him made the biggest difference. 1.. I didn't let him act like the world was ending. I made plans to go to a nice dinner a few weeks after his last appointment, scheduled a cruise for a few months after. 2..I didn't treat him like a child or like a sick person.
Anyway, like I said every person is different. I'm sorry that your family is going thru this.

Thanks ladies for the feedback. I assume it's the same as radiation, but I really don't know, and we don't know any details because we're still waiting on a CT scan and an MRI.

I thought the food might not be a great idea, but love the ideas of maybe some DVDs and organising a dinner for after treatments is done.

DH and I will both be at work fulltime, so I'm just trying to think of practical ways we can help her.
