Heartbeat ?

So everything says things are better once the heartbeat is heard but my question is does it matter that it is heard or as long as it is seen and measured on the ultrasound? Does that count. So in my head, I think yes, seeing and measuring count but then I think that they say you are much safer at 12 weeks and that is also usually when you can hear the heartbeat. Just wondering if anyone knows this or RE explained it. I am only 8 weeks but curious and not sure how to make the next four scarier weeks go any faster! I also hope when I go in Wednesday, a day short of 9 weeks, we might be able to hear it, one can hope, right!?

My RE told me that the risk of miscarriage drops under 10 percentish after you can see the heartbeat. I know this time can be so scary, I remember it. But try to relax if you can

RE said we were less than 10% chance of miscarriage after we saw the HB around 7 weeks.  It is definitely a scary time and I don't have any great advice except to repeat to yourself, "Today I am pregnant."  It helped me a little.

Thanks for the answers. I am always nervous about everything but the more I know and understand the better I feel. I was so excited to see and have the heartbeat measured, huge relief, but it just got me thinking about always reading HEARING it is good. So just wanted to make sure seeing it is just as good. Thanks for the responses!

Yep, the pp got it right. But I still was scared to death until after the first tri.

One way to look at it is you are finally on the right side of the statistics (90% chance of a take home baby), versus whatever your RE quoted you as your odds of your cycle working.

Good luck!!

So strange how the mind works! 90 percent chance of a take home baby sounds so much better to me then only 10 percent chance of miscarriage. Lol! Same meaning, different perspective! Lol, thanks!

I think what the dr.'s want to see is the presence of a measurable hb; so no, it doesn't necessarily have to be heard.  At all of my beginning u/sounds, most of the machines didn't have dopplers, so we could only watch and measure LOs heart rate.  That was good enough for my RE and me.

When you finally do get to hear it though -- it's a most wonderful sound!  Until then, I know it's hard; but try not to worry.  As a PP said, "you are pregnant today."  Enjoy it! Smile  GL at your appt. next week!!

You don't need to hear the heartbeat as long as the bpm are measured (or estimated to be 120+). Miscarriage rates drop to 10% (from 25%) once the heartbeat is heard/seen AND it is an appropriate bpm (a HB of <100 bpm increases chance of miscarriage once you're 7 weeks or more). Once you hit 10 weeks with a good bpm, the miscarriage rate drops to 3% and after the first tri 1%.

just seeing it means you have a better shot.  As best as I can tell, there are three major milestones the embryo has to go through

implanting
getting a heartbeat started
the transition to placenta taking over

I dont know if this is going to make sense, so bear with me, lol.

The way my first u/s was explained to me when it came to "hearing" the heartbeat was that at 7w what you were "hearing" was basically just a recording of the sound waves on an EKG, not the actual sound of the heart.

If that makes any sense at all, lol.  That being said, I have no idea if this is true or not, but just they way they explained it to me.
