what to do when I dont agree with my doctor....

happy friday ladies! 18w2d today, and have been stressing the fact im scheduled for an amnio on the 4th. long story, but there are antibodies in my blood and to make sure baby isnt getting attcked they want to do an amnio. my antibody is rare so there is a less than 1% chance baby has the antigen and is at risk. when my dr told me he refered me to a specialist because we cant wait any longer and need to know, I asked why amnio is my only option, why couldnt/cant they monitor my titer levels & do 2 week ultrasounds (what they will do if baby has antigen) which poses no risk to me or baby like the amnio does. he said that wont work amnio is the only way...i know i can refuse the amnio but I cant feel right knowing I didnt do everything I could to make sure my baby is ok, but how can he demand an amnio in order to monitor in the was I suggested?

Did you already see the specialist? Was the specialist the one who ordered the amnio?

If you haven't seen the specialist, I think I would ask to delay the amnio until you see the new doctor. Then you can ask the additional questions.

If you have seen the specialist, I guess you can stress how uncomfortable with the amnio you are. It's your body and you can absolutely decide for yourself.

no my dr refered me to this specialist who happens to be a 3 hour drive one way from me. so my consultation is immediately prior to my amnio. given the fact that i have history of anxiety and panic attacks, i thought my dr would at least consider less stressful/risky options with me. to me, he should be able to consult with the specialist if he doesnt know how to answer my question about forgoing the amnio and going straight to bi-weekly scans and monitoring titer levels, which he said was the only thing they will do if amnio comes back positive anyways.

You do not need the amnio. You really should consider finding another OB who will respect your wishes not to have one. They can monitor your baby's blood flow with ultrasounds and do NSTs to make sure LO is doing OK in there. These are harmless. I think your OB wants to take the easy way out with the amnio. Yes, it will tell you for sure if your baby has the antigen. If the baby has the antigen, you'll end up doing all the tests I just mentioned anyways. You could be putting your baby at risk for miscarriage with the amnio. Stand up for what you think is best, honey.

DON'T be timid with your doctor.  If he feels he has adequately explained something to you, but YOU don't understand, or still have follow up questions take up as much time as you need until he educates you enough to feel comfortable with making a decision or trusting his decision or until you have exhausted your questions but need to readdress this (or any issue) with your SO (or just give yourself time to think or plain get a second opinion on the matter).  It sounds as if you followed up with a question about why, and he gave you a big picture sort of broad brush answer that he didn't anticipate would need further assurance/explanation or second thought.  That's on you to push for what is going to make you feel settled, even through anxiety.  I've seen friends too timid to push and it makes their anxiety increase, in my opinion.  They are looking at the doctor/s as authority figures rather than a partner hired for his expertise and experience to assist not direct the birth of your child.
