Fortifying breast milk for preemie

My baby is now a little over 3weeks old (born at 34w3d). Per pedi orders we have been fortifying our LO's breastmilk with neosure to help her gain weight. She was 4 pounds at birth.  We have been taking the neosure powder and mixing it with water like the directions on the container call for and then we mix it with the breastmilk. Is that the right way of fortifying or are you suppose to just mix the neosure powder with the breastmilk? Hope we have been doing it right!!!   TIA!

Well I know when my son was getting BM we were instructed to fortify the powder (enfacare 22) directly into the BM - no water. Did the nurses/doctors not give you instructions on how to do it? I don't really feel qualified to say it's definitely one way or the other. Maybe ask your pedi?

No water, just BM.  You probably haven't done any damage, but I would change methods for the next feeding.  You should have been give a recipe/directions from the hospital on the exact ratios.  Also remember that once the formula powder gets wet, you have to use it within 24 hours if refrigerated and 1 hour if not.

The pedi was unclear and I should have clarified. We may have been doing it wrong for awhile now....ugh. My husband swore this is how they said to do it but I wasn't sure. Thanks though. I am going to call tomorrow. Thanks!

We were told to put formula directly into BM. And we were given an exact recipe...1/2 tsp per 90cc BM.

Don't be too hard on him or yourself.  I really don't think you've done any damage, just not as much good as with the correct ratios.  It isn't like you mixed the formula with Mt. Dew.  Hugs!

I would definitely ask your pedi.  We were told to just alternate her feeds--one with neosure, one with bm (sometimes it was 2 bm and 1 neosure) and to mix the bottle per the instructions on the box (1 scoop in 2 ounces of water).

Don't be too hard on yourself! As PP said, it's not like you mixed it with Mtn Dew! Smile

Try not to beat yourself up over this.  Keeping everything straight at the beginning is tough!

PPs are correct: you mix the formula directly into your BM.  Just switch it up for the next feed and continue to do it that way, and you should be good.
