Overtired late in day

Because DS takes awful naps typically 30 minutes he is so so so overtired by late afternoon/evening. DH and I are trying to find a way to help him nap better but aren't having much luck. Happy Baby recommends an early bedtime for a few nights like 5:30/6:30 and a set awake time. We are nervous to try this for fear of him bring up for the day at like 4am and us running into the same issues, just earlier. Plus from my earlier post it would seem many of you don't have a set wake time.

I'm curious then what our other options are. I don't know much about sleep training but always assumed they mere methods to help get better night time sleep...do they help with naps too?

Any recommendations?

I know for us DD can't go for more than 3 hours max without a nap so at the 2.5 hour mark I try to get her down. Last night our schedule got messed up so her last nap was from 5:45 to 6:30 and she went to bed late at 8:15. I find I have a harder time getting her to bed when she is over tired.

It seems like if we don't get L down right away when she's tired, she'll take a short nap. BUT- she used to not want to go down for a nap unless she was really tired- so we were in a nap HELL... Once we got her in the habit of going to sleep on her own relatively easily, she seemed to be able to nap better. She still doesn't sleep more than an hour or two- but that's enough for her to not be a terror the whole evening. Perhaps try to put LO down earlier for naps, before he's over tired?

Also- I have a friend who's LO goes to bed at 6pm, maybe yours needs an earlier bedtime? I know if L is really fussy in the evening before bed, it means she wants to go to bed early that night.

Our LO used to have 3 naps for this reason. He would nap in the morning (around 9am) then in the afternoon at around 1pm. He would then take another nap around 6pm.

When he did this, he would wake up around 7pm so then would only go down for the night around 9:30pm, but that was fine with us.

He only this week cut out that evening nap so this past week he changed his own schedule, and goes to bed at 8pm, 8:30 the latest.

So yeah, we basically just went by his cues and let him sleep when he wanted to sleep, even if it meant a dreaded 6pm nap. Eventually he just stopped on his own and now sleeps 8pm-7am or so.

Nap and bedtimes have been our hell as we'll, so I feel for you! I try so hard with all the tricks of healthy sleep happy child but one day she does great another she cries and screams ugh. What are you doing for naps right now? Getting my lo to fall asleep on her own every 2 hrs for naps has helped us. Sometimes I think I have it down perfectly at 2 hrs and she still won't go to sleep though I don't get it some days lol. My lo takes 3 naps a day 1 hr each, she was taking a longer afternoon nap not sure why she's not now! Her evening nap gets us bc it messes up bedtime sometimes! My lo does good with swing naps and crib naps most of the time. Putting to bed earlier did help us some, she will sleep from 8 pm to 7 or 8 am on a good night, but evening naps sometime screw that time frame up.
