Fed up & need help!

I have been CDing for about 8-9 months and at first I loved it, but now I am completely over it!

My daughter is always getting rashes and the diapers all leak so I ended up changing clothes a million times a day.

I've tried stripping the diapers, but it didn't seem to help. I'm using Tide Original powder and I have a top-loader. So maybe a different detergent?

I've been having to buy disposables and the rash immediately clears up, not to mention they absorb so much better.

But the bottom line is that I NEED to CD, it helps us out financially (when it works!)

I have FB, BGs and Kawaii pockets. The FB are the worse leakers and I won't even use them anymore. I don't think it's the fit, because they leave red marks on her legs, so surely that means they're tight?!

So, advice on detergent and how to strip would be IMMENSELY helpful!

Thanks so much!!

A rash in CDs only could be a detergent sensitivity.

Rash plus leaking could be buildup.

First I would start by putting my clean dipes in the washer and doing a hot cycle with no detergent. Take a peek in there mid cycle and look for bubbles. If there are a bunch , keep doing hot washes til they are gone. Lots of ladies do a RLR soak. I never have tho so I don't have much info on that. After your dipes are suds free, try them again. If your LO still gets a rash then try a new detergent.

Can you describe the rash? Where is it located (entire diaper region, just in the folds, etc)? Is it blotchy/raised/weepy? Does it have satellite lesions? Maybe try googling "yeast diaper rash" and look at a few pictures. Does it look anything like that? If so, you may need to treat your LO and diapers for yeast, which is more involved than stripping.

I've tried stripping the diapers, but it didn't seem to help. I'm using Tide Original powder and I have a top-loader. So maybe a different detergent?

We also use Tide and a TL, and have never had any problems. I haven't heard of Tide causing repelling issues. If the rash is generalized to the diaper area, your LO could have developed a sensitivity to Tide.

I've been having to buy disposables and the rash immediately clears up, not to mention they absorb so much better.

From what you're describing, I'm really leaning towards yeast.

I don't think it's the fit, because they leave red marks on her legs, so surely that means they're tight?!

When she leaks, where is the leak coming from? How often do you change her? Are the inserts completely soaked?

So, advice on detergent and how to strip would be IMMENSELY helpful!

I'm not sure I believe your CD's need stripped. It sounds to me like you need more absorbency, and you may be battling yeast

Thanks so much!!

The rash is located only where the skin touches the diaper. I did google yeast diaper rash, and either those are worst case scenarios or it isn't the same cause b/c dd's rash doesn't look nearly as bad as those depicted.

She leaks around the outer leg area.

For the FB, you might try tucking the leg gussets in once they're on her (basically make sure you can't see any of the inner white fleece). We had some trouble with out FB leaking too, and this is the only thing that really helps.

As far as the rash, it may be moisture sensitivity. DS gets a really horrible rash any time he's in a diaper that's too wet or doesn't have a stay-dry liner. Giving him 30 minutes of "naked time" (15 in the morning and 15 at night) seems to help a lot with keeping him from getting too rash-y.

Yeast won't go away on its own. I really don't think that's it.

I forgot to ask if the inserts are wet.
I still think trying a hot water wash should be your first step to see if you have buildup.
I about lost my mind with L having a rash like that, turned out it was just the detergent. We had no buildup, and one wash in a dif detergent and it was all gone.

It sounds to me the issue is with your detergent. I would do a hot water strip and then switch detergents. What is your exact wash routine?

I do a cold rinse, hot wash with detergent, and then 2-3 cold rinses. Lately, I've also been adding another hot wash with no detergent after the first one.

What other detergents should I try? We live in a small town and only have a Wal-mart and a Kroger.

That is a lot of rinsing! How much detergent are you using? Is your wash TL or HE? I would try a quick wash no detergent first. Than a heavy duty hot wash ( on the highest water level) with detergent, and one extra rinse. I buy my detergent online from Costco. I use Tiny Bubbles.

If it's only leaking near the legs, I'd say you need more in there or to change the diapers more often.  We could never use just one insert in our diapers.  It wasn't enough.  I'd also change the detergent.  Have you check out amazon?  They have cloth diaper detergent that you can have shipped to you as needed or you could try a free and clear any type of detergent(all, purex, gain) that should be available to any walmart or target.

Agree with PPs about changing detergents (try Purex F&C if you need to purchase something locally) and upping the absorbency of your diapers. If you're using just one insert, try two. If you're using two, swap one of them for hemp or bamboo. Obviously all babies are different, but I haven't been able to use just one insert since DD was about 3 months old. If we leave the house and I know I won't be able to change her within 2 hours I always stuff with a MF and a hemp insert.

I would not strip your diapers unless switching detergents and/or adding absorbency doesn't work.

I agree with PP that DD may need more absorbency and may have a wetness sensitive. I finally realized that was my DS issue when the rash went away with a staydry liner. I've started using small inserts with a staydry liner with my PFs and this helps so much!! We also do naked time everyday. Hope you figure it out! I would try all of this before stripping, IMO. Then change detergents. Someone posted a really good article on when to strip and when not too. I think the board was titled Stripping and washing?

I don't know if this is one of the problems but I figured I would throw it out there. My DS would get little red bumps wherever any PUL or fleece touched his skin. Turns out he has an allergy to polyester which was giving him a horrible rash.

We had to switch to cotton prefolds and wool to fix it. Hopefully that isn't your problem but it could be a possibility if you don't think it is wetness sensitivity. GL!

I agree with pps, sounds like a problem with your detergent.  I'm surprised by the number of people who say they use Tide on their diapers.  I was told to never use Tide as it had additives which can issues with CDs.  I've used Country Save for over a year and never had a problem with leaking or rashes due to build up.
