Sick baby need advice

Lady brought her sick child over to my house to be babysat but didn't mention he was sick; now my baby has it... 3 days before Christmas.... Thanks....

Anywho, what is a good cough/cold/fever medicine out there?

We prefer ibuprofen rather than acetaminophen due to DS's increased asthma risk... Do they make cold medicine for 1 and up? Everything I see says 4 and up for colds...

I guess I could always just use fever/pain medicine.... Suggestions?

I can't think of anything other than a fever/pain medicine. Whenever DD (3) had a cold they always just told me to worry about her fever. If the cough got too bad the Ped had me bring her in but it never ended up being bad enough. She didn't start getting medicines like that until she was 2 I believe.

I feel your frustration though about the holidays. Thanksgiving one of my nephews had a 102 and vomitting, shakes, etc. SIL and BIL brought him to the In-laws but he stayed in a guest bedroom watching TV except for when he ate. By that night my DS had a fever. Thankfully it didn't get any worse than that. Currently my DH, DD, and DS are recovering from a cold. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I don't wake up Christmas morning with it!

I hope your LO feels better soon! It's no fun to be sick and especially not on Christmas.

You can give Children's Benadryl for congestion. Call your pedi for dosing rec. I don't remember off the top of my head. I give it to DD at night to help her sleep when she's really stuffed. Otherwise, it's steaming in the bathroom and saline spray during the day.

I would call your pedi but really there isn't any medicine that you should give besides motrin. My ds is constantly sick so we know colds. We use a humidifier, tilt his crib so he can breathe better, ibuprofren as needed and extra water. We also use saline to help thin the nose mucus. Really there isn't much to do but ride it out.

Honey is supposed to help with coughs.  I tried it this summer and thought it was ok, but not amazing.  We usually do a humidifier in DS's room and put a pillow under his mattress.  GL!

I wouldn't even give fever reducing meds unless the fever is too high or over 48hrs with doc recommendations. I use baby vicks rub and plenty of humidifiers around the house. IMO the immune system needs to do its work w/o interference. There was one time LO had balance issues and I took her to the pedi, they said she was very congested & had a minor ear infection and wrote a Rx for dimetapp. It's an OTC but you need to know LO's weight for correct dosing.

There aren't cold medicines for little ones that young. And honey is a no-no for kids under 2 (risk of botulism - little tummies process the spores differently than adults).

Ibuprofen for the fever. A little baby vicks on the feet. And a humidfier. We've also had some success with the Johnson and Johnson vapor bath. Even running the bath with it in it and sitting with a LO next to it seems to help a bit.

This depends on who you talk to, our pedi says after 1 kids can have as much honey as they want. Our LO has honey and honey water any time he has a cough. The dr actually recommended it.

This. I've never heard anyone say no honey before 2, just 1. I would only dose ibuprofen if the fever was over 100. Humidifier nose suctioning are your best bets. Honey is good if there is a cough, I would put it in peppermint tea. No cold meds.

Our pedi and every source I've read say 1 year for honey, too.

Our pediatrician told us only to give Benadryl during an allergic reaction. We alternate Tylenol and Motrin when my son has been really sick with a fever. We also run a humidifier in his room and this past time we got him a toddler pillow to keep his head a bit elevated while he was sleeping. I also would avoid milk and dairy as it can cause more mucus which you don't want right now. I hope that your baby feels better soon! It makes me so angry when people bring their sick kids around. The last time my son was really sick was this summer when a mom brought her visibly sick toddler to a party. The toddler was coughing and had green thick boogers streaming down her face. Ugh!

Nose Frieda snot sucker (it works like a miracle, gross, but seriously a miracle at getting the snot out, google it).  And baby Vicks under the nose, on the chest, and on the feet.  We just did this with our son for several days and I swear by all of it.
