P/T nanny questions

I'm trying to come up with a draft contract for a nanny who will be watching our son one day a week for the next 5 months. There is a possibility (if I get this other PT job I'm thinking about) that we might need her for 2 full days for that 5 month time period. There's also a possibility that we might need her for longer than the 5 months (though she is set to finish her schooling in 9 - 10 months, at which point she'd seek FT employment elsewhere).

Do I pay her if we have to cancel on short notice because of illness?

If she's going to be driving, I'm OK buying a carseat for her car but I'm guessing she's not going to want it in there all the time, do I install it at the beginning of each day? Seems like a pain and I wish she could just use our car, but I'll need it to get to work.

Sick time for her? I'm leaning towards no because she'd accrue it so slowly that she would barely get to a full day by the time the 5 months was over.

We are paying her at the top of what she said she was looking for ($14/hr). She's got a fair amount of experience with older kids but very little experience with toddler age (and none of it recent). She's getting her Masters in Ed in a Montessori program so she had a lot of school knowledge, but again with older kids. So I feel like less "benefits" are ok since we are paying her more but what do you think?

Do you pay her if you cancel last minute: Yes. She is available and set to work her scheduled hours in the contract regardless of illness on your end causing the cancellation.

Sick Time for her: I lean toward no, but I'm full time, almost 365 days a year, and I'm allowed 3 paid sick days per year. A little ridiculous, but I've also rarely used them in the years I've been with my family so it has never been an issue.

Carseat: Ask if she is willing to leave it installed in the car, if not, teaching her to properly install it and just checking it on the day she has your LO seems like less of a pain than you installing it every single day. When I still used my own vehicle I had my own seats, took them to the fire department to check proper installation, and rarely, if ever, removed them.

I wouldn't really consider her a nanny if she's just babysitting one day/week for 5 months, but I don't know what the laws are on that.

I'd pay her if you cancel.  She isn't free to take another job on those days.

Chances are, with as young as LO is, she won't need to drive on that 1 day/week that she has him, so I wouldn't buy her a carseat and just put yours in hers just in case.

Sick time?  Nope.

if your sitter is only there 1 day why does your LO need to be driven anywhere? cant they stay home?

sick time no

vacation no not for 5 mo

pay if you cancel but she should be able to handle a mildly ill LO

be sure to agree up front whether you take taxes out and that $14 an hour with taxes out is less than $14 an hour :-)

I think I can count the day in one hand when we didn't leave the house since he's been born! He is super cranky in the house and we are usually gone a good portion of the day. He loves getting out of the house but the weather here is so bad that walks aren't often possible in the winter. So I do think the carseat is necessary.

Thanks, this is all helpful!
