Birthmarks

DD started getting what looks like a strawberry hemangioma on her chest a few days after birth. I actually thought DH had pinched her when we went to snap the top part of one of her sleep 'n plays until the mark didn't go away. I read a little about them and they're no big deal; they usually disappear by the time the child is school aged. But I noticed that DD's has a large lump underneath it. The mark itself is level with the skin surface, but the lump under the skin is soft and seems to be getting bigger. It doesn't seem to cause her any pain. Any thoughts?

Totally normal, don't worry

My DD had one appear shortly after birth on her right shoulder blade. The Pedi noticed it, and told us it will get bigger, darker red, and may become raised- its all totally normal. As you have read, they usually go away as your baby grows. DDs was blood red and you could feel (and if she was on her stomach- even see) it through her clothing. It started to flatten out around age 1 and has faded quite a bit as well. No big deal, and just keep in mind- it'll probably get 'worse' (darker, larger, and more poofy) before it'll get better, but its no big deal.

My pedi said these are totally harmless, depending on where they are on the body. Example: My sister had one on the corner of her eye, and as it swelled, it was causing her eye to droop and started messing with her vision. Since hers was becoming an issue because of where it was on her body, we had to give her medicine- it went away and is totally unnoticeable now, and hers was HUGE...

DD (born Sept 2010) developed one on the top of her foot around 2 weeks. As she gets older it's getting less bumped up and less red. we continue to just monitor it and the dr has not worried about it once.

My DD has one on the top of her head and on her right thigh. The one on her head raised a good bit. Dr said the same as PP stated. I am hoping so cause it freaks me out.

If it helps, I had one on my forearm as a child, I'm now 37. Near the inside bend of my elbow. It is totally smooth and no lumps underneath it, but it still looks a little darker pink than my skin tone (I am extremely pale). When I get angry/flustered it darkens sometimes.  My husband sometimes uses it as an indicator to my moods!
