Advice on how/when to make bedtime earlier?

Hello all,

Our daughter is a fabulous sleeper, 9 or 10 hours straight. I cannot remember the last time she woke us up in the middle of the night. In an ideal world, she would go to bed for the night around 8:30, in reality it is more like 9:30-10:00 pm most nights. My hubby doesn't want to make her bedtime earlier because she'll get us up earlier, which could be true, but it would be nice to have part of the evening to ourselves. She's also a good napper, a 3 hour nap most days. How would you accomplish this? Shorten the nap? Just start the night routine a few minutes earlier each night until she's settled in her crib around 8:30? Thanks.... :)

Ferber book suggests changing the morning wakeup time first, so making that earlier so that she is tired earlier. Basically shifting both by about 15 minutes a day. You may also need to shift the nap time and some of the meals by the same amount.

I wouldn't shorten the naps as babies need to nap.

this sounds exactly like our DD. up until about 4 days ago, her bedtime was 9:30pm-10:30pm. one day i just upped her last feeding of the night by half an hour, and then the next night, did it again, and for the last 3 nights she was out by 8:30pm and all three times she slept her normal amount of hours, until last night, she actually slept an extra 2 hours!!! and it seems like she sleeps much easier for her naps during the day now!

just little changes over the course of a few days should help, it did for us!

When we started doing bedtime routine it was at like 930pm also.  We just slowly made it earlier by 20 mins or so every 4-5 days.  We now do 630.  The theory is that regardless of what time LO goes to sleep then they'll still sleep in to the same time.  This is very true for my LO.  For instance, she's been sick so if she's fussing and doesn't fall asleep until 9 she still sleeps in until 9am.  If she falls asleep at 7 she still sleeps until the same time.

thanks everyone! she only took a 2 hour nap today rather than her usual 3 so we're going to start her routine about 30 minutes early and get her down earlier. I'll let you know how it goes! :)
