ebf and sleep

im slowly starting to lose my mind with this sleep deprivation. i think im going to put on my bgp and start pumping and giving him a bottle before bed. he was doing 6-7 hour stretches at night but is back down to 4 or 5. which still isnt awful, but the kicker is that after he does his 'long' stretch, i will be lucky to get 2 hour stretches for the rest of the night. since i typically cant go to bed until 2 hours after he goes down im not able to take advantage of his long stretches. so yeah, im exhausted.

dh is changing his shift at work in january and i am going to be getting a waitress/bartending job at nights so either way i need to get colby used to not nursing to sleep.

have any of you other ebf-ers done this? was it successful? im grasping at straws here, but he is close to 13 pounds and nurses plenty during the day so i at least need to try.

No advice...dd is in the same situation! She was sleeping 10 hrs straight but now does a 5 hour stretch then 2-3 hour stretch. I think she's teething though. It's really rough when you get used to sleeping long stretches then lo goes back to short stretches of sleep.

We tried doing a bottle before bed a few times to see if we could get a longer stretch. He took the bottle fine and fell asleep but unfortunately for us he didn't sleep any longer than usual.

DD gives us a good stretch and then is up again two hours later.

I don't know that the bottle makes a difference but my LO gets a lot of bottles so maybe it's just our routine. She is at grandma's or daycare from 730am to 130pm or 5pm depending on our schedule.

  Not really helping, huh? GL!

We have been giving her a bottle of pumped milk before bed since about 3 weeks.  We started as a way to train her to take a bottle knowing she would be in daycare and also as an easy way to administer her vitamin D. We also put gripe water in the bottle with the milk and vit D.  She's been sleeping 7-8 hrs at night since and just started sleeping 10-12. I don't know if it actually make any difference but its our routine now.

I EP, so it is different I guess, but Aidan has started doing more than 3 hours two days ago. He gets plenty of milk during the day, but I guess he just needed more.
Give it a try but don't be too dissapointed if it doesn't work.

It sounds like you need to do the bottle at night whether or not it aids in longer stretches due to your upcoming work situation. And you'd want to start that a bit before you begin working so that you can rest assured your baby will go to sleep well fed in your absence.

I don't understand why a bottle would help a baby sleep longer though. I understand why it would/could if it was formula, but why does it make a difference where the BM comes from?

And I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I think 4-5 hour stretches followed by two hour stretches is great (and not just because we have it worse) but because your baby is 12 something lbs! Ours is hefty 16 lbs and still never (other than two nights ago with the miracle night... which could be because she slept very very little the day/night before on our 12 hr drive to my parents) sleeps longer than 4-5 hours followed by 2 hr spurts until morning... on a good night! I think, despite how it sometimes feels on here, that that is incredibly normal for a 3ish mo old babe.

But I for real hear you on the loosing it bit.

I would say definitely get on the bottles so you can go back to work. But, nights I get called into work and she gets a bottle of bm she doesn't sleep any longer than when I bf her. We still get up at least once.

We have been giving a bottle of pumped BM every night since week 4. He's been STTN 10 to 12 hours straight since then. We also always bathe before bottle, IDK if that helps. It tires him out.

I'm sorry you are at your wits end. Lack of sleep is so frustrating. It sounds like you'll need to start bottles anyway because of your work situation. Hopefully he takes it well for you.

When it comes to sleep, my DS2 never slept well so I tried the bottle of BM and a bottle of FF and it never changed his sleeping patterns. Hopefully you have better luck. I'll be thinking of you.

We're back to 3.5 hrs for our long stretch so I tried this, too, wondering if she just wasn't transferring as much milk from me at night. Sadly, it made no difference. I go back to work next week and I'm starting to panic about how I'm going to be coherent and productive on this little sleep. It's going to really suck to lose my morning nap!!

We only get 3.5 hrs all night, for us the key was to get her in a routine and able to go right back to sleep after waking and nursing.  It works out pretty well now, she is awake for about 15 min and then we all go back to sleep.  Bottles  didn't make a difference for us.

We do a bottle of pumped milk before bedtime.  It was working fine for awhile, but eventually the only way i could get him down was to nurse him for a few minutes before bedtime.  I tried ditching the bottle and just nursed him, but that didn't seem to satisfy him.  I'm frustrated b/c I'm now afraid to leave him at night.

Have you tried changing his sleep position? DD will only sleep long stretches at night if she's on her belly...

I'm lucky to get 3 hrs followed by 2 hrs. I've never been more exhausted in my life.

DS is EFF at night and we still only get 4-5 hours at a time. He eats 2x at night. So frustrating.
