FREAKING out in bath tub

DS has always loved bath time, up until a few days ago when we decided to stop using the bath seat because his big belly was smashed up against the front bar and was making him uncomfortable and leaving a huge red indent on him.

Day 1 of not using the bath seat he lunged forward to grab a toy and submerged his face in the water for a second. We both freaked out, but he managed to calm down fairly quickly.

Every day since then he throws a major $hit fit when he gets in the tub. Standing up, arching his back, trying to climb out of the tub, face turning red, tears streaming down his face...it's terrible :( I'm hoping it's just a phase, but I'm worried he's like seriously traumatized from the head dunking incident. Anyone have ideas on how to get him to be comfortable in the tub again? I feel so bad for him :(

First of all, that's terrible and sorry that your LO's having such a rough time with something that's supposed to be fun.  I'm sure that it'll pass given some time.  Have you ever gone in their with him?  If not, perhaps the comfort of having mommy of so close would help ease his distress.  If you have, well then, what about bringing a fav toy or something in there (whether it's meant for the tub or not) to distract him.  Just a cpl ideas..never had that before, but it's where I'd start.

:( Sorry to hear that happened. Our DS had a similar mishap. I agree with Excited...it might help if you get in also. When this happened to DS we started with a little less water and alot of distraction. I bought him a new water toy and put him in with just a little water.

My LO had really bad bath anxiety. Wipz suggested a towel on the bottom of the tub so she didn't feel like she was slipping and it really worked for us.

When we switched DD1 to the tub from the kitchen sink, she hated it. I don't remember exactly why, or maybe it was for no reason at all. We bought an inflatable duck for her to sit in, and it was a no go. She literally tried to crawl out of the tub. So, DH and I would sit in the tub with her, and she calmed down. The first time, with me, she clawed her way up my body and clung to my neck like a Koala. She got used to it after about a week. She is daddy's little girl, so she felt more comfortable with DH in the bathtub, which of course was FINE BY ME!! DD2 is still in the kitchen sink, but I'm sure she will be thrilled when she and her sister can take a bath together. Might I recommend a spout cover??? That way LO won't bump his head on that? They have lots of different ones, and you can add bubbles ... Just saying. Kids love bubbles.

We had the exact same thing happen with us. I ended up having to get in the bath with DS for a couple times. Then when he was in the bath solo again, he was still very timid and scared of falling over again. It took him a few baths to actually reach for a toy. He will get there eventually!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I've tried a towel under him, we have a spout cover and just got new bath toys for Christmas. I think I'll try getting in with him until he gets used to being without his seat!
