Anyone have experience using a diaper service?

Hi all!  FTM here.  I'm just beginning my second trimester (ticker is a week behind) and am researching diaper options.  My DH and I would like to cloth diaper, but feel we are limited by our living arrangements: we live in an apartment and rely on laundramats for our laundry.  I've gathered that cloth diapers have pretty specific washing instructions that I'm not sure we'd be able to meet with the machines we use.  They're pretty inflexible with regards to cycles, etc.

I found a cloth diaper service in my area that does pickup of soiled diapers and delivery of fresh ones.  You basically rent the diapers from them in any size or quantity.  Looks like they start out at $13/week for 20 diapers and go up from there depending on quantity and size.  No need to rinse the soiled diapers at all - just put thm in the wet bag and leave them out for pickup once a week.

I've also read on these boards of people buying mini washing machines, which is something I might consider.

Thoughts or experiences with diaper services?

That price is for like potty training toddlers. You'll use that many in a day with newborns. No really, but close. When I was looking I looked at the most expensive package and worked from there.
I don't have info on the portable washer but I woul def look into it.

I did a service with DD for the first 3-4 months. It was costing me about 80$ a month with our service. Which didn't save us much for the dipes. Also, you only get prefolds. We got rid of the service and got a stash of pockets when DD started daycare. I think in the long run it would be cheaper to just rent a small washer.

Until your baby starts on solids, you don't have to rinse off the poo. Secondly, with that kind of price tag on a diaper service, I would rather pay to do my own diaper laundry at the laundromat. I think it'd be worth it even if you had to go to the one not in your building, but down the street (know what I mean?) because they'll have more options on the washers (especially top loaders). I'd rather spend my money at the laundromat than deal with the service. Either that or get one of those portable ones. I can't remember her name, but lageorgiapapier or something like that has a blog. Oh! I think it's "Accidental Wall Flower" or somethin. Check it out. She has a lot of tips and she does the portable washer. :) Good luck!

I had a bad experience with using a service - not enough diapers - difficulty getting them to bring the right size and number of covers etc.  It was a lot of work communicating with the service and then there was the anxiety of not knowing if I would get the right delivery and if it would be on time.  It definitely ended up being more work than doing laundry.  That said, I was glad I didn't have to buy newborn sized diapers and think it was worth it for the 3 weeks my son was in newborn/extra small diapers.

Our average burn rate with DD for the first month was 15 diapers per DAY. So 20 per week would have been woefully inadequate.

I would absolutely look into getting a portable washing machine for your apartment if you want to CD. Or figure out the cost/benefit of washing at the laundromat versus using the service at about 90 diapers per week the first month.

As PP mentioned you don't have to rinse soiled diapers with a newborn anyway, so that is not going to be a benefit of a diaper service until your LO starts solids.

I have no experience with CDing yet, but that price is more than what you'd pay for disposables. We're CDing DD3 to save money, and a diaper service didn't work with that.

I'm a FTM expecting my baby in about a month - so no experience yet.  But just wanted to share that I'm in a similar boat as you (apartment-dweller, no in-unit laundry, coin-op machines in basement).  If I were at the mercy of this set-up, I definitely wouldn't be able to even consider CD-ing - - but about a year ago I purchased a portable washer and some accessories, and have been so successful in doing our own regular laundry (clothes, linens, etc.) in unit that I am pretty sure the transition to CD will go okay, laundry-wise.

I agree with the PP's mention of lageorgiapaperie's blog, "The Accidental Wallflower" (http://www.theaccidentalwallflower.com)

If you're curious, here's some info on the portable washer that I own, and other accessories that I am hoping will make us a successful CD family.

The washer I own:  Haier HLP21N.  Info available on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Haier-HLP21N-Pulsator-1-Cubic-Foot-Portable/dp/B002UYSHMM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356492325&sr=8-1&keywords=hair+hlp21n

Although I bought mine used for about $75 from Craigslist, it has worked out so well for me that if (heaven forbid) it broke tomorrow, I seriously would have no qualms about buying a brand new one.

I also own two drying racks, similar to this.  I purchased mine at Bed, Bath and Beyond for around $25 apiece.

And I just purchased this retractable 5-line clothesline last week, to make it easier to dry sheets, blankets, etc.  I've only used it twice so far, but I'm a fan and have no complaints (yet).

Hope this helps!
