Esme

I posted the other week that Esme is one of the few girl names DH and I like, but I was disappointed to see it is used in the "Twilight" series. The consensus of the BNB was that Twilight was not the first association of the name and even if we have to say "no she wasn't named after Twilight", that we shouldn't let it deter us from using the name. Well, I was chatting with a friend who has read/seen Twilight (I haven't) and she kept pronouncing the name as Ez-MAY, whereas I've always heard it as Ez-MEE. How do you pronounce it? Will I be constantly correcting people?

I've always pronounced it ez-may. You are going to have pronunciation problems with a lot of names though so I wouldn't let that stop you either if you like it pronounced ez-mee.  I have issues with my son's name all the time, Alec. I have family that know that it is Alec and how it is spelled and they refuse to say it. They continue to call him Alex no matter what I say.

I don't associate it with Twilight but I've never seen the movies. I pronounce it Es.me. I honestly don't see the appeal of this name.

I adore Esme and it is my dd's middle name. The correct pronunciation is esmay, though. If you aren't a fan of this pronunciation, I would suggest a different name. Pronouncing and correcting people to esmee will make it seem like you don't know your own daughters correct name :/ I've never come across anyone who made the connection to twilight... At least to my face, haha

I love Esme! It's so pretty and old-fashioned, but not old ladyish. I haven't read or seen Twilight so I didn't make that connection at all. I say Ez-may.

Ez-may, and I love the name, but would have twilight in the back of my brain.  I wouldn't let that deter me from using it though.

I don't know... I'd sooner associate Esme with Twilight than Jacob or Edward. A lot of people probably hadn't heard of it before Twilight, whereas everyone has heard of both Edward and Jacob and there are many other associations with both those names.

As for pronunciation, I would definitely say ez-may. It seems that most people would pronounce it this way as well, so you would have to be okay with correcting a lot of people, a lot of the time.

I've heard ez-MAY so I think you'd be correcting most people if you like ez-MEE. I like it but I prefer the first pronunciation.

I'd pronounce it Ez-mee. But I'm familiar with the name from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels where it's a shortened form of Esmeralda so Twilight would definitely not be my first mental association. Sadly though Twilight is way more popular and well-known than Discworld so I bet you're going to get a lot of people thinking you got the name from there.
