holidays/ stressed about 3 week old

Hi all,

I am taking the baby to Christmas and of course I plan on keeping my son away from anyone who appears to be sick. I also plan on MAKING everyone wash their hands. However, I am wondering how you are all handling the holidays? One friend suggested I keep mittens on my little one and one suggested that I keep him in the baby Bjorn so people will be less likely to ask to hold him/get too close.

Any other tips? Im terrified of my little guy getting sick!

Can I postpone Christmas for 6 months :) ???

I think people make such a to do about this. We went to the in laws for thanksgiving when dd was three weeks. There were 50 people there. No one asked to hold her, his aunt had been well for a week but wouldn't get close just in case, and no one touched her hands knowing they go in the mouth.

I would put her in the carrier if that works for you, you can eat and drink easier any way. You'll find that people are respectful. Unless I have a very unique family.

DD#1 was exactly 1 week old on Xmas. I kept her in the moby a lot. Once someone watches you attempt to put that thing on they don't ask you to take baby back out lol. She did wear mittens but that was b/c she was scratching her face. FYI. My DD got a fungal infection in her finger nails from wearing the mittens to much and not letting air get to her hands.

Anyway. Between breastfeeding burping changing diapers there wasn't a whole lot of time for people to get to hold her. My family is considerate enough to not come near a baby if they feel under the weather so I was pretty relaxed about it.

This. And when family/grandparents do visit, I insist they wash hands, DS is wearing mittens and I ask that noone touch his face. To be fair, I ask that of anyone who holds him.

I may be unique in that I have the most inconsiderate inlaws on the planet. For example if they have the flu they would still show up and demand to hold the baby, so I just avoid them. This may be the best Xmas ever

We aren't going to any holiday stuff this year either. Flu and RSV is so bad here, it's impossible to know if anyone has been around someone sick that will be at the party. Our relatives would brush off a cold as "allergies" and try to hold him anyways. They are irritated at us and think we are being ridiculous, but I felt comforted yesterday by a visit to children's hospital.( LO is ok, had a higher fever, but just had a mild virus) The ER Dr told me light-heartedly that "if family is mad at you, you are doing something right" in reference to keeping them away from people during flu season. He said so many people come in the ER after having their newborn out. He rec. we not take him out anywhere until 12 weeks min. I know that sounds extreme, but he said 4 weeks and under, immune system is very weak, 8 weeks it is a little better, and 12 weeks it is about as strong as any kid. There is no get-together that is worth me worrying about who holds the baby and telling a little cousin they can't hold him. My mom and Dh's parents are coming to our house to see the boys open gifts and then we will have a big breakfast together. I have to say, I kind of like these low key holidays.

My son is 3 weeks old and we're skipping my IL's holiday party tonight. They're having 30 people at their home and it'll be a complete germ haven. In the words of our pedi "Adults get stupid and don't think twice about touching a newborn even if they are sick. Family members are the worst offenders. STAY HOME".  My IL's are a little peeved but too bad. I won't risk a hospital stay with my newborn to please them. We'll see the immediate family tomorrow.

staying home this year.  i suggest insisting that everyone wash their hands and also have them wear a receiving blanket if they want to hold him/her.. this way its her germs on it rather than baby getting germs from clothing
