Terrible Insurance Adjusters (not PA35+ related)

Sorry this is so long!

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some advice in the off-chance that someone here may have experience with insurance adjusters. Our home was recently seriously damaged by a moron teen who lost control of his car in the rain and crashed into our house, causing heavy damage to two walls of my elderly dad's room. I went through the insurance claims process through my homeowner's insurance (kid doesn't have enough coverage for damage of this sort). The company is subcontracted by Allstate, and I didn't know that until I got their forms after we signed up with Allstate. Anyway, the adjuster came and went and was very nice, as were the contractors who submitted their bids to the adjuster, who in turn will submit his report this week to the insurance company.

So I called the company this past Friday just to check and see how things were going. The "examiner" assigned to my case was incredibly rude, nasty and callous. When I told him I just wanted to know when the work might get started because there are heavy storms right now and I didn't want the house damaged even more, he just said, "It is what it is" and that he couldn't really help me, it might take any length of time to get things started. He said I could go do the repairs myself if I didn't want to wait!! He was such an a**hole that I was left reeling!

At the end he told me to just go celebrate Christmas and there was nothing else he could do. He seemed almost sadistic.

If you had to deal with such a terrible adjuster, what did you do? I'm drafting an email to let him know what I think of his treatment of me, and am planning on calling his supervisor (not enough time to do so Friday) to tell her about it Monday, maybe requesting a different examiner.

But I've never done anything like this before, so I wanted to know if anyone else has been through it and might have some advice for me. Thanks in advance!

I'd be asking for his supervisor, based on him being disrespectful. Maybe they can't get to you quickly due to the holidays, but based on potential damage, I'd want to know what their plans are too. This is what you pay insurance for.

I hope this gets fixed quickly for you!

Thank you GT! I hope it gets resolved quickly too. It's been hellish having to deal with all of this. Our Christmas is pretty much not going to happen. But hopefully the new year will be a lot better.

Definitely make a customer complaint.  I was an insurance adjuster for three years.  While they sometimes have to tell customers something the customer doesn't want to hear, adjusters are never supposed to be rude.  The service you received was unacceptable.

My BIL is an adjuster for a different company, and if Allstate is like his company, they are hideously overworked, tons of layoffs, stress, etc.   Just some insight.  Certainly no excuse for that jackhole's behaviour.

I would have immediately asked for a supervisor and let him know why you want to talk to a supervisor.  No need to be polite yourself in this situation.

Thank you Carnation and BB for your advice. I am so grateful for you all for the insight into this, because I just had no idea what to do, or whether insurance examiners were supposed to act this way. I have never had to submit an insurance claim before, so I was clueless about it all.

The weird thing is that I was very polite over the phone. I just wanted to find out the status of the claim and how soon we could start. I told the adjuster about it and even he was shocked!

It was just too much to deal with some moron crashing his car into our home (it's our first home too), but having to deal with some sadistic freak insurance examiner who tells me there's nothing I can do about it but wait was just too much. I don't know if he has a reputation of treating everyone this way or it was just me. I just hope he won't be allowed to get away with it.

Hopefully it'll all get resolved soon. I'll update on what happens.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and thank you so much again for the advice!

I don't have any advice, but whaaaat a douche. I agree with GT that it may be hard getting stuff done over the holidays but they could at least attempt to sound sympathetic. Sheesh.

I am an insurance agent and I hate to hear stories like yours.

My advice,  is to call your local agent and tell them what happened, then they can get a hold of the examiner and tell them they are a douche and speak with a supervisor (on your behalf).

If by chance you don't have a local agent, I would call and speak with their supervisor.  People who work in claims are suppose to be compassionate and understanding, I get that you can have a bad day, but that is not your fault and being hateful is only making your claim experience(and company experience) a bad one.

Good Luck

I know, right? And I didn't even describe everything he said or his tone of voice! I still don't know if that's his general personality or just how he treated me.

Thank you! I'm curious as to whether this kind of behavior is common. Hopefully not. I was going to call my agent, but I did get hold of his supervisor and she was very nice, and said she'll be handling my claim from now on. I forwarded the email I wrote to him to her too. So they know what I was up against!
