Anxiety medication and Pregnancy?

Hey all,

I know I have read on here about how some of you with anxiety or depression had taken their medications while pregnant.

I am not pregnant yet but obviously we are trying and I do suffer from generalized anxiety after my mother was ill and I was taking care of her for a year before she passed away. I have been trying to lessen my dose of Xanax but I feel like every time I get close to getting off, I need to go back on the full dose and I am back at square one. I just don't know if it's going to be realistic for me to be completely off of them.

Obviously this will need to be discussed with a doctor when the time comes, but I was curious about whether any of you knew which medications would be "safest" to take during pregnancy and what experiences any of you had with this issue.

Thanks in advance!

I was on Lyrica, not for anxiety but for pain. I talked with my GP slash OB and my pain doc and we talked about some different options then chose one to try. It's a pregnancy class B drug that we were all comfortable with. It's not as good and I can definitely tell a difference, but it has been a lot easier a transition than I expected.

I would suggest finding out what the different classes mean and deciding what you're comfortable with, then communicating that to your doc when you discuss. Good luck!

Xanax is Category D so there is a known harmful effect on a fetus. I would talk to your prescribing Dr before continuing TTC so you can make an informed decision on if you can be switched to a different med or come up with a taper schedule. Meds like Xanax are addicting so they need to be weaned slowly. It took me 2 months to wean off of xanax and I was on a relatively low dose.

Obviously, I am not a doctor, but I don't think Xanax is the best way to deal with day-to day generalized anxiety.  That stuff makes me a zombie and I only use it once in a while when I am starting to have panic attacks to keep those at bay and get myself kind of "leveled off" again.  Usually like one pill at night for a day or two.

You should definitely talk to your doctor about your TTC plans and maybe they can give you some options for managing your anxiety with a different drug or weaning you off of Xanax and seeing how it goes.

I would do this before you get pregnant because you shouldn't be going cold turkey off of any medication like that.

A lot of the usual antianxiety meds are either category D or C. I know that Buspar is category B, which is considered pretty safe. It would be a good idea to get familiar with the different categories and talk to your doctor about options.

Do some research on meds and also natural ways to get off.  There ARE OPTIONS.  DON'T let anyone/any doctor tell you you don't have a choice!!!  Medication is NOT the only way to deal with this stuff, although it is one.  Just do some research.  Read my blog!

I take a very low dose anti-depressant to treat my anxiety and when I was KU all the docs told me that it was safe to take while TTC and pregnant.

I think the best option is to talk to your OB about yoru specific situation. GL!

Thanks...I read a little of your blog so I can go to my doctor tomorrow armed with more questions! I have tried to do some online research about the classes of these drugs and cant find anything! I am obviously not looking up the right stuff!.

If you can, talk to you pharmacist where you get your medications filled. They can provide you with safe options as well, and let you know the classes and what they mean.

This. I would suggest talking to your doctor to see if there's a safer medicine that can still help you manage your anxiety. Xanax can cause negative effects and withdrawal symptoms in a baby if you take it during the pregnancy.
