Scratching Head @ 4 am ??

Dear Mums..

First - Merry Christmas to you an' your loved ones : )

I have a strange problem with my little one who is about 6.5 months old...

he takes 2 feeds during night. One around 12 am and the other around 4 am after which he goes back to sleep quite easily in seconds. But since last few nights after the 4 am feed - even though he wants to sleep, he is scratching his head very very harsly... I need to put my hand to protect his head , other wise he wakes up with so many marks on his forehead ( his nails are very sharp - mittens dont help, they are just superr sharp !  )

- he doesnt have dry skin as his skin / scalp are well oiled / washed...we use mustela body products

- if i wake him up completely by switching on the lights / talking to him , he stops scratching  ....but as soon as he back asleep - he starts again !

- his stomach is full / diaper is okay ...

 - Also, no such problems any other time of the day / night !

Any idea - why is this happening ?

TIA

How long are his nails?  Mine does the same thing.  I just think he has an itch.

DD does this as a way of self soothing. Maybe filing his nails after clipping them would dull them a little so they don't leave as many marks.

my LO has ALWAYS scratched at her head, and will tug her ears when she is tired. it is her 'tell'. i have to make sure i am clipping her nail regularly or else she will have a head/face full of scratches.

My LO does this too! Except for she does this at every night feeding. It's definitely her way of self soothing while I'm nursing her or after I'm done. I just have to keep her nails trimmed all the time :)

My LO pulled all of his hair out doing this. It all grew back but I have no idea why he did it!
