ectopic loss - a few questions

hey all.  first post here.

2 weeks ago my doctor discovered a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.  evidently i was 8 weeks along.  i had NO idea.  this was our second loss this fall (early natural m/c in sept).  same-day laparoscopic surgery left me with one less fallopian tube and 3 entry points.  my belly button incision is still tender and raised, 17 days post surgery.  has anyone experienced this?  when did the pain finally subside for you?

this will also be addressed at my follow-up appt this week, but i want to cast the net out here to see if anyone else has experienced something similar.  it's fairly tender to the touch, and i am really hoping this is just part and parcel with having your belly button sliced open, and not indicative of some other issue.  up to that point, i was a surgery virgin.

also...

how soon after your surgery/loss did you try again?  we were going to wait a cycle, but now i think we'll just keep trying without any break.  i waffle on whether or not this is the best decision.  would love to hear your own reasons for why you chose your timetable.

thanks.  it sucks to be here, but i'm glad i'm among people who really DO know what it feels like.

I can't help with you with your questions regarding the surgery, but I wanted to say I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Not the same thing, but DH had an incision along his arm last year that was still tender and raised after about 1.5 weeks and when he went back in they told him it was not normal and gave him some antibiotics and cream that took down the swelling within a day or two. He was not leaving it uncovered enough. Can you call the nurses line and let them know, just in case?

I am so sorry for your loss. I know this is a difficult time emotionally and physically.

For me, I stayed home for four weeks after my surgery. My surgery was not laparoscopic; I pretty much had a smaller-scale c-section. I physically healed pretty quickly. My scar still hurts from time to time, but the pain is not very frequent, like it used to be. I have vitamin e oil that I use on my scar. I also have scar lotion, but I haven't used it much.

We started trying again in November, after four cycles post-op. we were advised to wait two cycles by my dr. Last time, it only took us six months to conceive, but this time I only have one tube, so I'm not sure what this will be like. We waited because we were both not ready after two cycles. My DH was worried about losing me(the whole surgery thing was pretty scary for both of us), and I was very unstable emotionally. I still have a hard time every once in a while, but I think that's normal. I still think about it everyday, and I miss my baby everyday.

Again, I am sorry for your loss. It is not fun to be here, but having this place has been such a warm, safe place for me.

Sending you positive thoughts,

Mrsfunk07

thank you, ladies!  this is a sucky club for sure, but it helps to have others who really do know what it feels like when you lose a pregnancy.

i had my followup appointment today and my doctor said the bumps and soreness at the incision points were very very normal - evidently the granular tissue is less organized at wound sites, and will take some weeks or months to fully soften into the more typical skin feeling of the rest of my body.

i think we are probably going to just continue not using protection and see what happens.  my doctor was telling me an egg from the "wrong" ovary can find its way into the other fallopian tube because of the way the parts are positioned within our bodies.  evidently (and this blew my mind, as i totally had a 6th grade sex ed poster mental picture of the "T" shaped female reproductive system) the fallopian tubes actually come off the back of the uterus, and often even touch each other as the make their way down behind and come alongside the ovaries.  when the ovaries release the egg, the single remaining fallopian tube can draw in an egg from either side, so the chances aren't automatically slashed in half just because i no longer have both tubes.  strange and relieving all at once!

anyway... all that to say, it was a shock and an education and a learning experience all wrapped into one awful week.

fortunately, this situation puts me in the high risk category for my next pregnancy, so i'll be having frequent hCG checks and a very early u/s to check on levels and positioning, etc to make sure the baby lands where s/he should the next time.  that part is a little relieving.  i couldn't stand just waiting months until i knew anything concrete about the viability of a new pregnancy.  fortunately i'll know as soon as it's humanly possible to detect anything (good or bad).
