First real "owwwwie"

yup - got his head bumped on the bathroom wall after getting changed by his grandma (DH mom). Left a slight redish purple bruise the size of a nickel above his left eyebrow. Apparently she was holding him and went to toss the diaper, and he went "wham" right into the wall. I heard the thump and scream.... DH and I almost fell over each other trying to run to the bathroom.

I was so stunned, shocked, speechless and LIVID - I grabbed him and walked away to console him, bypassing everyone concerned straight to my room and closed the door.

DH later came in and apologized adn said his mom felt horrible and made some excuse about how LO just wiggled and threw himself back. I just glared at him and said, "is this the first 4 month old she's every changed??? wth???"

I later called the advice nurse, did some checks and all is well... but still my baby's first real ouchie... broke my heart. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, I guess mistakes happen - but seriously... aren't you extra careful when holding a LO especially one that's not your own and you're not around constantly?

If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading... I guess its more of a vent since I couldn't go off on my overseas visiting Mother-In-Law whom I really felt like whamming her head on the wall as well.... 

Has you LO gotten a real ouchie?

I banged Mina's head into our night stand when she was less than a week old. I felt horrible about it, she is fine. Babies are resilient

I would cut your MIL some slack, she loves her grandchild. Right?

Agree. Stuff happens! The first time LO gets a bump or bruise on your watch, you'll want forgiveness, right?

I bumped DD's head on the swing when I put her in the first time. She was three days old and I was sure I had addled her brains. My mom tells me she used to bump my head into door frames all the time! She has a phd but was unable to remember that the baby's head sticks out past her arm!

S ALWAYS throws himself back. I mean, almost out of my arms. Once, at 4am, I didn't think about it and he threw himself back into the wall. I felt horrible but he was fine five minutes later.

I'm sure she didn't mean to, but I can see why you'd be upset initially. She's probably more upset with herself than you are with her though.

I can understand why you're so upset.  But it was obviously an accident.  Like other PPs said, she probably feels worse about it than you do, and your LO has probably already forgotten about it as of 5 minutes later!

Eh, it happens. I'm sure it will happen to you someday as well. She probably feels terrible, so I would cut her some slack.

Agreed. I bumped DD's head yesterday by accident. These things happen and I'm sure she feels horrible.

Accidents happen, but I would be upset too if this situation happened to me! Babies truly are stronger than we think they are. I'm glad Koa is ok. His bruise will be gone before you know it!

I'd have had a heart attack at first, but I'd forgive as well. Shizz happens. If he lost an eye, by all means hold a grudge.

My Mum rear ended me with LO in the car. I almost strangled her. So far, we've not had any owies that have caused LO to cry. But I've hit his head on the wall before. And also on the ceiling of my truck while changing him on my lap. And once Mil was pulling him out of the car seat, and she's not so bright.... And she banged his face all along the handle. No tears yet. I always hold my breath and wait for it... But no tears. It always sounds worse than the reality

DH nipped the tip of her finger with the nail clipers a couple days ago.  i wasn't home, thank God because she aparently screamed like crazy for a while.  she's fine now, its healing quickly and she's more worried about her sore mouth than her finger

I'm sure at the time you were very angry. Just remember accidents happen. Once I went to pick up my nephew because he was having a fit, and he threw his body backwards, and hit his head on the floor. He started crying harder than he already was. My BIL knew I didn't mean for it to happen, but was picking on me saying i threw him on the floor. I was so upset that I cried.

My niece and,nephew always want to give LO their toys. When he doesn't grab them from him they drop the toys on him. My nephew dropped a toy cell phone that bounced on the floor, then onto LOs forehead. No bruise, just a red mark for a while.

Thx everyone.. all is well this morning and all is forgiven.  Koa is fine and definitely resilient. A little battle wound that'll probably be a converation piece for a few days... I'm better this morning.  I guess I should have added it didn't help that we put on a big party yesterday for his baby dedication and I was extra sleep deprived and had about 60 ppl come through my house. haha... that added to nerves.
