Going off the Ring...transitional BC b/f TTC?

Hi -

We're planning on starting TTC this summer. I've been on the NuvaRing for several years and I'd like to give my body a few months to adjust (and me to get to know my natural cycle again) before we start, so I plan on going off of the Ring about 4 months early. Neither of us like condoms so we'd like to use something else during that time. I've thought about getting a diaphragm but I was wondering if anyone else had thoughts, experiences or suggestions in terms of transitional BC.

Thanks and GL everyone!

If you want to know your natural cycles, I'd recommend using FAM/NFP, which is charting to avoid pregnancy. When you're ready to TTC, you can just use those charts to help you get pregnant. I'd recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility and the Fertility Friend tutorials (you can get there through any of the chart links in our siggys). You can still use a barrier method during the fertile window, but charting will help you identify when that is.

I don't know that I'd go from BC to relying only on that if you've never done it before...unless you are 100% OK with getting pregnant while learning what your fertile window is.

I know you and your SO don't like condoms, but you woudn't be using them for very long.

That's a good point. You'd have be to be really cautious in the beginning. I'd still chart and combine with a barrier method. Maybe for the first couple of cycles, use the barrier every time.

Well, we'd be OK if we did get pregnant during those first months, but I'd really like to be confident with how my body works before that happens. Before starting BC I never really paid attention to when my period would happen...it had been irregular, or at least not every 4 weeks, for most of my teens, so I just stopped trying to figure out when it would come next. The few months before I started BC I actually kept track and realized that I just was more along the lines of 34 - 36 day cycles. I just want to give my body a chance to readjust and for me to start keeping track again so I know more. I didn't know if anyone else had preferences with barrier methods of BC to use in this kind of transition window. Thanks for your thoughts so far!

It took my body forever to adjust after going off the nuvaring, but I was on it forever. If you use any form of BC its not really going to be a natural cycle and I wouldn't think oral bc would be any better? I agree with PP and maybe suck it up and use the condoms for a few months until you get charting down. GL!
