Jury Duty Two Weeks before EDD

My summons arrive this weekend and asked me to call in when I'll be 38 weeks along.  HA!  I don't think so.  Although, I guess I'd rather go and get it over with before the baby comes rather than postpone it and have to serve in a couple months after he's born.  I know that if I show up and they dismiss me, then I'm done for at least a year, but if I give an excuse to not come, then they can call me again sooner.  I'm going to call in and see what they recommend.

I would just show up.  But I would probably be real dramatic about it...  I'm a ham like that

If you go, they will probably dismiss you for "hardship" if you explain the situation to the judge. Good luck!

I agree I'd show if you get called and I think they will dismiss you for being pregnant. Just make sure they are aware of how pregnant you are. DH had jury duty last week and he might have fudged the truth a little and told him his wife was 39 weeks along to get out of it. They actually asked me if he got a call that his wife was in labor if he would leave or stay, umm hello! lol

Haha, I was thinking that no lawyer in their right mind would expect me to think rationally and be unbiased.  DH had jury duty a couple weeks ago and was considered for a child molestation case.  I got all choked-up just hearing the few details he share with me.  I couldn't imagine staying composed if I was hearing actual details of a case like that.

Another issue I'm having is that I was planning to start my maternity leave that week.  Which means I would be using  my accrued paid time off at that point.  If I'm going to be serving jury duty, I want to record it as jury duty time and extend my leave at the end.  My dr will have signed me out onto short term disability by then.

I would call because some areas are cracking down on no shows. You don't want to risk not showing because you're in labor and then having to clear up a bench warrant.

Just go they will take one look at you and dismiss you. It's too much of a pain to replace you if you actually were selected.

I just called and surprisingly, there was a live person I could talk to!  Any way, she told me just to have my Dr write me a note excusing me for now, and that when/if I get my next summons, I can deal with that at the time.

Definitely go.  You will get dismissed and that will count as serving for the next three years.

I received a summons for jury duty this summer and there was a box that you could check stating you were pregnant as well as one if you already had small kids at home. I was excused!

I went about a month ago, and the prosecutor basically took one look at me and dismissed me. I thinnk they were afraid my water would break in the jury box!

Haha you should totally go and then pretend that you're going into labor....make a big scene! j/k ;) No, in all seriousness, I agree w/ PP....you'd probably get dismissed no problem.

:)  I know in our state, you don't have to even go.  You just fill out the form on the back of the form they sent you saying why you should be dismissed and mail it back.  I was called about a year ago, but I was still breastfeeding, so I was dismissed for that via the form on the back of the postcard they sent.  You  don't want to have to sit at the court house for hours during jury selection before they dismiss you!

I don't know if that always works or not though. DH got the form and we filled it out saying he wouldn't be able to serve due to his job, tv reporter, but he still got called and had to spend the morning answering questions before being dismissed 4 hours later.

Show up.  I'm guessing judge will take one look at you and dismiss you, since you can't control when you're going into labor!!

I got a summons for 10 days before my due date about three weeks ago, I took a request to to the courthouse to be excused (because jury duty here lasts 30 days) and the lady at the desk told me I would be getting something else in the mail and I have yet to see anything so I may still have to show up...lol I will be a total ass about it and waddle dramatically and pant and maybe even cry.
