sick grandma WWYD

Merry Christmas Eve ladies! My husbands grandma is in the hospital, very ill, with complications of bone marrow cancer. He wants to go visit her today and say Merry Christmas. LO has a very bad cough and is sneezing and coughing nonstop. I told him I should not go in with LO so as not to get her sick. He thinks I'm just trying to "get out of going". Am I wrong? Isn't it safer for grandma not to be around someone who is sick?

Hm that's a tough one. I have zero medical knowledge though. Could you ask someone who is more familiar/knowledgable with her condition?

Maybe you could both go and just take turns going in the room, the other would stay in the waiting room with LO.

That's a good idea! He isn't sure if she's awake or not, so she wouldn't notice LO not being in the room. I just don't know if he's contagious or what, maybe on of our RN bumpies will know :

If she is undergoing chemo I would say absolutely not. My husbands aunt currently is and they are advising all sick people to stay away. You can't even see her if you haven't had a flu shot.

Call the hospital and see what their policy is. One time when N had a cold we couldn't go see my dad because it was a bigger risk to my dad. Sorry you have to deal with this.

I wouldn't risk it. If her counts are down then even getting a common cold can be very dangerous...plus, if she's on an oncology floor then they probably do not want anybody who is sick on the floor. The patients on those floors often have very fragile immune systems and cannot fight germs like average healthy people!

its not a good idea to bring a child this young into the hospital to visit anyone, especially since its the season for germs.  i would say definitely not.

Yes  You can always call the hospital and ask, too.

Thanks ladies! I let MH read the responses, so I know I wasn't overreacting with my choice to keep LO at home.
