which yarn to buy

Hi,

This is my first time posting on this board, Im a FTM due in June. I learned how to crochet over the weekend and wanted to buy some yarn of my own to start making the baby a blanket. I was wondering is there a specific name brand I should buy.

I go by feel. Something soft in color and feel will always win me over. (Might be why my yarn stash is overflowing). Make sure you buy enough of the same dye lot to finish your project. GL

If you will want to wash the blanket (and have it not shrink), you'll want to make sure to buy yarn that is NOT wool.  Wool yarn is made specifically to shrink and make felted projects.

There is some great baby yarn out there.  I love Vanna Baby, Caron Soft yarn, Bernat baby yarns, etc.  Most stores have some samples of what the yarn is like once it is knitted/crocheted.  You can touch it, fold it, etc to see how it feels to you.

Good luck!  I love crocheting and have made a few blankets, sweaters, hats, and booties for my little guy.  He's arriving no later than January 5 (I'm being induced) so he'll need some stuff to keep him warm.  Plus, his daddy and I were both bald when we were born and we anticipate our LO to be bald too!  :+)

You can use wool yarn if it's labeled as superwash wool. It's very soft and durable and can be machine washed and dried. The down side is that it tends to come in fingering weight in most big craft stores and it can be pretty spendy. I made a baby blanket for my SIL out of cotton and it became her favorite one because it was soft and absorbed drool and milk and was easy to wash. Her acrylic ones were really soft but liquids just went right through them and got on the babies clothes or on her clothes.

I've used Lion Brand Homespun yarn and it's nice and soft.  Just be sure whatever you choose is machine washable!

I love homespun! It is so soft and easy to work with for beginners! Also try some of the red heart lines for babies. You can find the different types and color switches on their site just go to red heart.com. Click on yarns and I think baby is a category

I am a bit of a yarn snob, so take this with a grain of salt maybe...

100% Acrylic yarn can be/get scratchy, gets pilly and just doesn't wear very nicely. It can feel good in the store but then when you wash it, all your hard work has gone to waste.  If I use 100% Acrylic I go for Vanna's Choice or Simply Irresistible (found at Michael's).

My favorite yarn currently is Cotton Ease, you can get it at Michael's or JoAnn's, the best price is usually at Knitting Warehouse (link below). The colors are great, so is the stitch definition and it washes well.

I don't like Homespun it gets fluffies--my son was on an afghan someone made with it and choked on one during tummy time.

I too would consider myself a yarn snob... :) 

I like cotton and cotton blends for babies, just feels softer to me, and more baby-appropriate. I like the Bernat Cottontots, and knit my niece a blanket with it that is still around 3 years later, and gets played with often. The washing instructions do say that it should be hand-washed and dried flat, though. Also, pure cotton does tend to be a bit stretchy, if that sort of thing bothers you.

I also like the Jeannee from Plymouth. It's a cotton/acrylic blend that is wonderfully soft to the touch, and because of the acrylic, doesn't have that same stretch that the Cottontots does. It can be machine-washed, and comes in a wide variety of colors. Incidentally, this is probably the yarn I will use for the blanket I intend to knit for my LO.
