I am a bit of a yarn snob, so take this with a grain of salt maybe...
100% Acrylic yarn can be/get scratchy, gets pilly and just doesn't wear very nicely. It can feel good in the store but then when you wash it, all your hard work has gone to waste. If I use 100% Acrylic I go for Vanna's Choice or Simply Irresistible (found at Michael's).
My favorite yarn currently is Cotton Ease, you can get it at Michael's or JoAnn's, the best price is usually at Knitting Warehouse (link below). The colors are great, so is the stitch definition and it washes well.
I don't like Homespun it gets fluffies--my son was on an afghan someone made with it and choked on one during tummy time.
