how much BM in a bottle?

How much BM in a bottle?

Just wondering how much I should be giving my son who is 3 months old in his bottle. I usually do 3.5-4oz and he will usually finish it but not always.

Today my mom just mentioned that she thought he should be getting more. But when I do more, he will often just puke a bunch up. I only offer a bottle when we are out at a gathering for instance or shopping, so usually only once a day but not everyday. (my mom understands why I would only offer 3oz when he spits a bunch up but just thought it would be more)

If and when I would switch to formula at some point, do babies take more in formula than they would in breast milk? I was looking on kelly mom and couldn't really find a good answer that made sense to me.

Any help would be great!

I know my LO gets a bottle a few times a week and drinks between 3 and 3.5 oz. I think what you are giving your LO is fine and if your LO acts like they are still hungry that's one thing but if they seem satisfied with 3.5 or 4 ounces I'd stick with that.

Dd is almost 4 months and only take 3 to 3.5 in a bottle. Sometimes she only takes 2.

My ds1 never took more than 4 oz until he was about 9 months old then we bumped him up to 5 until he was weaned at a year. DD is 4 months old and taking 4 oz. If I give her anymore than that she spits it up. Everything that I have read or anyone I have asked has said that between 3 to 5 oz is the norm for a bf baby.

I am an exclusive pumper... My daughter is all over the place with how much she takes though... Usually around 3-4 oz totally on demand.  She has 6 oz at bed time and 6 oz when she wakes up in the morning.  I usually put 5 oz in bottles though.

This, except DD is three months old. We start with 2.5 and add more, if necessary. She usually goes for a second round and eats 3 to 3.5 total, but I hate wasting it if she doesn't.

We did 3 oz until Thanksgiving. My mil is pushier with the bottle and dd was consuming 4 most of the time after they were done helping. Dd is 3 months 4 days for reference.

That's about what mine eats.

I couldn't tell you about the switch to formula though as I do not know if there is a difference in how much they eat.

ok thanks.

My sister's daughter is 10 months and has been drinking 8oz formula bottles since she was 5 months old and she is very small for her age. So I was just curious. Obviously if my son is hungry i'll feed him accordingly!

I always fill the bottles to 4oz when I leave LO with MH or my mom. LO sometimes finishes the bottle, sometimes not. But always seems satisfied. We tried to bump it up to 5oz when she started finishing 4 but ends up spitting up afterwards. So I guess 4oz is the limit for her....lol. Oh and it's always BM. I nurse her otherwise.

Mine takes a 5 to 6 oz bottle at bedtime.  I nurse during the day.

Formula fed babies drink more than BM fed babies. You cannot compare the 2. L takes 3oz of BM at nearly 4 months old.

Um, my pedi told me last week half of the baby's weight every 4-6 hours.  LO's 9 wks and 12lbs so that meant 6oz at a time!!  I was a bit skeptical since my mom was giving him 3oz every 2-3 hours.  We upped it to 4oz and he could only take 3.5oz.  I wouldn't push mine more than that for now!

We were at 4oz but after the 12wk growth spurt she started wanting more and now eats 5.5oz. I was skeptical, but when I pumped a feeding I was out for I pumped 5.5, so I guess that's our new normal.

Exactly, you can't compare. The nutritional composition of BM changes as baby gets older to meet the needs of the particular age. Obviously formula doesn't change so they eat more to get the same amount of calories, fat, etc. DS1 never had more than a 5 or 5.5 oz bottle even at a year old. 3 or 4 was more typical.
