Caffeine and bf

So I've read that by drinking caffeine while BFing can cause sleeplessness in the baby.. Does anyone know how true this is? This momma is in need of some coffee!!

I think it depends on your baby. Mine doesn't seem affected, neither did dd1. I try to follow the pregnancy rule of 200 mg. I usually have one cup of coffee a day, maybe two. I agree that I too need it, between a newborn and a toddler who won't sleep anymore there are days I can't move until I have a cup.

I think it depends on the baby, too, and the concentration/amount of caffeine you're having. I have one or two cups right after I feed DS in the morning. I don't drink any other caffeine and I don't think he's been affected by it.

My LC in the hospital said 1-2 cups of coffee or 1-2 12oz sodas a day is fine.  However I had one cup of coffee when my LO was about a week old and he seemed fussier than usual.  I think the caffeine upset his tummy.  So I've been avoiding it.

Some folks swear it off and/or say it messes with baby so they stop.  Others like me don't end up having any reason to stop.  There are days coffee is the only thing I drink all day.  I likely drink 1-3 pots in any given day.  To manage the caffeine I keep a canister each of regular and decaf so that I can decide how strong each pot should be.  I almost never make a pot more than 1/2 caf.  Neither of my kids have been affected during breastfeeding (or gestation). Both of my kids slept through the night and napped fine from about 6w for DD and 8 or 9 weeks for DS.

My DD is extremely sensitive to caffeine. I was only drink a little bit...like a cup of tea type thing. I had no idea what was wrong with her. She started only sleeping 20 minutes at a time and she became really fussy. She was owl-eyed all the time. I was looking up her symptoms...and suddenly i read up about caffeine. And sure enough, I stop drinking and eating anything with caffeine and she was back to her normal self.

But as pp said, i think it depends on the baby.
