A two year old and gifts....

How many presents can a two year old open at once? I have several presents for her from coworkers, friends, and the daycare. Then we have ours. Then she had Xmas Saturday with my family, and tonight Xmas with Dhs family. It's a little overkill. Can i just set some gifts aside? To give her throughout the year?

When is her birthday? Can you set some aside for that? I did since LO's birthday is Jan 3. My 2 y/o was/is way overwhelmed by too many presents at once- he took the $1 truck books out of his stocking and would have been happy stopping there, lol.

Otherwise, the specific day of Christmas has no meaning for a 2 year old... I would just unwrap the presents and put them out one or two at a time for her to play with.

I let my kids open their gifts, then I put some away for later.  My 4 year old chooses which ones he will put away, I choose for my 2 yo.  It's a long winter and it is great to be able to pull out a new toy on those cold winter days when we are stuck in the house.  Me and the kids are off until next Weds (DH has to work) and I definitely plan to pull some toys out later in the week

I'd do this.  That way you can see what all the gifts are and decide which ones to put away.  It might be good to switch out the toys in a few months anyway to avoid boredom.

My LO lost interest yesterday in opening so we didn't push him. By the time my parents left, he had opened all of theirs (so they could watch) and he did the rest later. Now that they are all open, I'm hiding some of them away because he's literally overwhelmed with all the new choices. I'll rotate through them and I think he'll enjoy them more.

Lo1 is actually so overstimulated she's been having big issues falling asleep. She's so excited. We had to open presents in front of the parents but anything that had to be put together just stayed in the box. The slide and kitchen sets are staying in their boxes until all the excitement dies down a bit. And she was totally happy with her little Thomas the train, so we didn't even bother to unwrap the giant train set. I don't ever remember getting this much stuff as a baby. And dh swears he had to share single action figures with his brother.... Boy how times change.

What I normally do is let him open presents in front of the gift givers that give him things in person and save things that are mailed or left for him to give him throughout the year.  I always unwrap everything so we can send thank you notes, and put the others in my closet for a rainy day, long car trip, etc.  If it's a duplicate of or similar to something he already has, we donate it.

I think most 2 year olds would be overwhelmed after 2 or 3 presents at a time.

We got way too many items for DD this year and our plan is to take the bigger items (wagon with blocks; magnetic easel; etc) and kind of parcel them out over the next few months. Maybe we bring out a new, exciting toy in Jan...and then one in Feb...and then another in March...so she's not bombarded all at once with a ton.

Or you could divide up the new stuff and just keep items in batches and rotate them out every week or so - same concept - keeping the currently available items fresh and interesting.

hi cindybaf! i think it really doesn't matter how many gifts your two year old can open. When my eldest child was two, i made him open every gift he got. and the look on his face knowing that all those were for him is just priceless. Of course he also got the best two year old gifts one could have but the feeling and reaction of the child was the best part.

You can set it aside if her birthday is just a month after or just close. But if it will take so long before her birthday, you can let her open it all at once. I assume that some of the gifts will be clothes and toys. the top two year old gifts. So it will be no harm.

Why not? It's her gifts and she deserves it. She can only experience it once a year. And i think it's our kid's right to have their happiness. Just sort out the top two year old gifts which she can use and those that are for her necessities.
