paxil and pregnancy

 Hi Everyone,

I’m not sure where to post this so I’m posting in a couple of the boards. Has anyone taken paxil in their pregnancy and the baby came out fine? I went to my high risk OB yesterday and he said while there is an increased risk of birth defects, the relative risk is still pretty low. About 1%. I’m looking for some feedback from women who have taken it during pregnancy or who are taking it. Thanks.

I was on Paxil before we started TTC DS and my doctor switched me to Celexa instead.  He said he felt more comfortable with the Celexa than the Paxil.  I'm not sure how it compares as far as safety though.  I didn't have any problems from switching brands so maybe that's an option for you?  DS was/is fine.

The only thing of note is that I wasn't able to produce any milk last time and I was told that it could have been tied to the meds I was on.  I also had a rough delivery though and that could also have caused it.  Or I could just be one of those women who can't make milk.  I guess we'll see this time around.  I just wanted to throw it out there though because no one told me at the time that it was a possibility that my milk production could be effected, I wish I had known.

GL!

Thanks for your reply. One thing that I have a hard time with is tapering down from the Paxil. I go nuts. How did you do the taper?

I would consult with a medical professional on how to do the taper; what's right for one person isn't right for another. I wouldn't ask a random stranger on the internet for medical advice like that.

I took Paxil throughout my entire pregnancy with DD, the entire time I nursed her (with no issues, for one year), and throughout this entire pregnancy. I guess I can't speak for this baby yet, but DD is perfectly fine. That said, I am on the lowest dose (10 mg). I missed a few days last month when I had a mix-up with my refill and DH almost had me committed. Lol. In my case, the benefits outweigh the risk!

Just Sadie,

Did your OB encourage you to come off of it? I have heard stories of OBs refusing to take patients because of paxil?

I was only on 15mg of the Paxil.  Or maybe it was 20mg?  I can't remember exactly as it's been several years of course.  I went right down to the 10mg dose of Celexa and didn't have any noticeable changes/problems.  I was taking it for anxiety along with Xanax as needed, but I didn't take the Xanax during pregnancy at all.  After I had DS, maybe when he was around 9 mo or so, I actually stopped taking it completely.  I think at that time I split my pills in half for a week or two and then just stopped taking it completely and was also fine.  Obviously I was on a pretty low dose.

Hey, sorry, I forgot to check back on this post. No, my OB never encouraged me to get off the paxil. She's pretty liberal as far as OBs go, though.

I haven't but I know people who have and their babies were fine.  I used to work in welfare programs and I know women who did crack while pregnant and their babies also came out "fine".  I think when it comes to something like Paxil, you need to assess whether the benefits outweigh the risks.  If you are going to cause yourself so much less stress/anxiety/depression - whatever the issue is - by being on it while pregnant, then it's better to control those things than the low risk to the fetus.  Good luck :)
