how soon are you sterilizing bottles?

My EDD is in 11 days!! :)

I just washed the bottles, nipples, accessories, etc. with warm water & soap. How soon before do you think I should boil them?

If I boil them today or tomorrow, should I boil them again after baby comes home?

When are you sterilzing yours?

Are you planning to formula feed or pump?

I'm going to BF and pump, so I'm not going to bother with sterilizing bottles until about a week or two after she is born. I want to establish a good supply before I introduce a bottle.

If you plan to FF and need the bottles right away, I would go ahead and sterilize them now and store them in a cabinet where they won't get dusty.

You only boil once. Boiling weakens the plastics they use, and they're only made to be sterilized before the first use. If you want to sanitize them later, you'd want to do it by soaking everything in a gallon of water with 1 tsp of bleach for about 10min. Personally, I'd just boil them now and put them away ready to go.

My plan is to pump.

The cabinet is all cleared out and ready for her bottles :) I guess I'll just do them now as you never know when you'll deliver.

I'll be sterilizing once the baby is home. Honestly, I prefer spending the extra money for the first few days/week home to just use the little nurser premade bottles - quick and easy, no cleaning. IMO there is nothing worse than cleaning and sanitizing a bottle for just an ounce being drank out of it.

This is generally true, but to be safe check the packing directions for the particular bottles you have. For example, playtex drop-ins suggest boiling nipples once a week if I remember correctly. Generally you should throw away nipples and pacifiers after 3 months use.

I was talking about bottles, specifically (since most bottles, now, are not made of glass... or silicone... lol)

We're a drop-ins only family. You do not boil latex nipples more than once, ever - regardless of brand - Playtex specifies this on all latex packages. You can boil silicone nipples for a few minutes every week - tho the bleach sanitize is still just as effective and makes more sense if you're already sanitizing your bottles and latex.

I washed and steamed but will steam again before use.

I steam them for the first six weeks and then just wash in hot water. I have never boiled them.

We boiled everything once after we got home and then just washed everything in the dishwasher after that.

Glad I read this thread. I didn't even know that you were supposed to boil nipples etc.

I'm planning on breastfeeding so I am not doing anything with the bottles right now.  When I do pump and use them, I'm not going to boil anything.  I'm just going to wash everything in really hot water by hand with a safe wash.

Just adding - we use glass bottles.

Ditto. I plan to EBF so I never thought about it. If I can't or if I choose to pump I'll know.

Thanks.

I do have two sets of bottles, the one says to ask pediatrician if it's necessary to sterilize before use. The others, i forget I don't think it says anything.

I do have a snack cup thing though that says to boil for 5 minutes before first use.

I guess I'll just sterilize everything to be safe. I also didn't know that you had to do it once.

Lots of moms I talk to do it before every use.
