Pronunciation of Naomi

We found our last Friday that Nemo (what I've been calling LO#2) is a girl. I'm super excited that I'll have a little daughter to care for. Anyway, we've decided on Naomi for the name and don't want to change it. But I'm noticing that many people, myself included at first, mispronounce it, substituting the "ay" sound with a long "i" one. I corrected my own speech but DH hasn't, and wants to use the NN "Nye." Is it a big deal if we pronounce it "Ni-omi" instead of "Na-omi?" How do you pronounce it?

Well, the letters don't make the sound "nye."  I'd be peeved if my parents gave me a correctly spelled name with an incorrect pronunciation out of ignorance.  What a PITA for life.

Obv, I say nay-o-mee.

It is definitely nay o me. I would side eye someone who tried to pronounce it differently.

Same here, I don't think any other pronunciation would make sense and you would constantly be correcting people.

I looked it up and apparently Nye-omi is a pretty common mispronouncation. I've been trying to correct my family, but around here almost everyone says it wrong so I feel like I'm in a loosing battle. I didn't know if I was becoming too picky.

I actually would say it like you, Nye-oh-mee.  Not sure why, but it's my first inclination.  Maybe both ways are acceptable but Nay-oh-mee is more common?

Hit "post" too soon.  I was going to say that my name is Tamara is has been mispronounced my whole life because I use the less popular pronunciation TA-muh-ruh and most people assume tuh-MA-ruh.  It hasn't bothered me that much, having to correct people.

BTN says both are legit.  I strongly prefer Nay-oh-me but I actually always ask if I see it written.  I've known 2 little girls with the name, both pronounced the way I prefer.

I pronounce it Nay oh mee.

Nye -omi sounds like a regional accent to me. So I guess it is fine if that is the way everyone in your area pronounces it, probably would be harder to try to fight the accent.

I've always said Nay-omi.  But my dad used to call my mom "Nye-omi Gnome" when she wore little horn-rimmed glasses.

I've heard it pronounced boh ways although I would say the "nye" version is more of a "nahomi"which makes sense with the spelling but when said fast, makes the "nye" sound.

That said, it's a name I go back and forth on pronunciation, but the Naomis I know go by Nayomi. Or maybe I've just been calling them that :

I am a frequent lurker on this board but I have to jump in on this one.

Naomi is my middle name and I pronounce I Nay-o-mi but my father says Nye-o-mi. I honestly don't think it's a mispronunciation but a personal preference and sometimes regional differences. My father and I live in different parts of the country.
