Nausea and Heartburn....

Since I have this, I'm totes preggers right? J/K.

Lately, I've been waking up with both in the mornings and I was just wondering if any ladies have any suggestions on how to avoid/help not wake up with it? I don't eat right before I go to bed, and I tend not to eat many acidic foods with dinner, either. Looking for any natural remedies that I could try before taking anything like Prilosec, Zantac, etc. Tums are no help. Only thing that seems to help is ginger ale for the nausea, but heartburn is still kicking my ass until about 10 or so AM (I wake up at 5:30).

That sucks.

Have you tried a glass of milk or chocolate milk?

I don't get heartburn but my Mom swears by it.

Ew that stinks. I get heartburn a lot. But the only thing that really works for me is tums. :/ and the nausea....I've been getting that in the am too, but I think it's from my vitamins.

That's fine. I completely understand. Hopefully we see you around more! And yeah. I never had heartburn until getting pregnant with DD, and now I only get it around O and 2ww. It sucks, but I guess I'll deal somehow haha.

I think aloe vera juice is supposed to help with heartburn. Sorry, I've never tried it. GL and I hope something helps!

When I had trouble with heartburn and acid reflux one of the things I found that helped was using an extra pillow at night or putting blocks of wood (a couple of inches thick) under the headboard bed posts so that I was a teeny bit more elevated while sleeping.

Are you taking prenatal vitamins before you go to bed? I was getting horrendous heartburn and that was what was causing mine. I switched to gumis and take them right after dinner instead of before bed

Thanks for the continued suggestions. Feel free to keep 'em coming. I'm not taking a PNV at bedtime, I usually take my vitamins in the morning.

A book I have recommends drinking between meals but not with them, avoid fatty and spicy foods, avoid laying down after meals, and avoid ice cold, very hot and carbonated drinks. Sorry I don't have any better suggestions! Milk is also a great idea! Chewing crystallized ginger and B vitamins are good for nausea.

i second this. i sleep with a wedge-shaped pillow (got it off amazon.com) and i swear by it. it has helped me tremendously!

I third this. Sleep on an incline with your head and chest elevated. A large wedge shaped pillow would work great. Also don't drink alcohol late or before bed if you drink a lot.

I have irritable bowel syndrome and have dealt with this in the past. I took omeprazole for a long time for ghe heartburn and have a zofran prescription for the nausea, but the natural remedy that worked for me was peppermint soft gel pills. Peppermint, like ginger, helps with nausea. Some people chew peppermint gum, but I found some soft gel pills at my natural food store that my doc approved. Good luck!

I'm a side and stomach sleeper 98 percent of the time. The kind of bed and pillow makes a big difference for me. I also have IBS and GERDs. I personally like ginger for nausea and take omeprazole twice a day.

It seems extreme but doctors will tell you to prop up the head of your bed so your bed is at a slight angle. Sleeping on more pillows won't work as well as propping up the whole bed

This site explains it a bit better:

Google apple cider vinager and reflux. People swear by it. Didn't work for me,but mine is super bad. 4pills a day at top dosage.

Also keep your head raised at night. I don't eat anything three hours before bed,and small frequent meals through the day seem to help me as well.

I'm a side sleeper too,and I have back issues from it , but I do elevate and sleep on my side. Almost sitting some nights.

Oh man, that stinks, and I totally feel your pain....Literally!

I'm actually on prescription meds for GERD which is called Dexilant...it helps, but technically I'm not supposed to be on it, 'forever', just for a few mos, and the acid should magically disappear, and I'll never have this problem again...Wrong!!!

I probably need to visit a GI dr. to have something that does regulate me completely (not just temporarily fixes the issue), and he/she should also check out to make sure there's no damage to the esophagus.

But some advice, Tums definitely helps me in a time of emergency need!  And I sometimes have to sleep with my pillow upright, which is not the most comfortable (had to do it practically the entire time I was PG with DD!), but it does help!

Other advice is to avoid foods...chocolate, soda, acidic sauces/salsas, etc....

Good luck..if it doesn't get better, definitely make a dr. appt. as you might need something stronger!

take care!

Prilosec is pretty awesome stuff.

I tried diet changes, lost weight, I've always slept at an angle- none of it helped.

I'm a back sleeper. Also, GM mentioned weight loss - even though it didn't work for her, it did work for me.

ETA: omeprazole for GERD also worked.
