NT scan

My doctor said this test is optional and she didn't recommend it for me because of my age and family history. She does a blood test at 15 weeks that screens for downs and spina bofida. The NT is an u/s and blood test. She pretty much said its mainly done by those who are over 35 or with a history of birth defects or someone who would abort the pregnancy if there was an issue. Thoughts/ opinions? I'm just deciding if I want to have it done or wait till 15 weeks and get the other. I'm 28 years old with no history on either side. 11 weeks today

The decision to test or to not test at all is totally up to you, but I suggest consider what testing means and what you would do with either outcome before you decide to test or not to test. There is honestly no right or wrong answer, just whatever is best for you.

Secondly, check with your insurance company first before you decide on either test to see if they are covered, and if they are how much they are covered. Some insurance companies do not cover the blood test that you discussed as an alternative to the NT scan because it is still in the experimental stages.

The test is totally optional.  The decision is totally up to you.

I had it done with my first baby, but only because it was free.  We had awesome insurance!   I had no history of anything in my family.  I just did it because I wanted to see the kid.

Its up to you. Our thoughts and opinions don't mean much. If you want to get it done then get it done. If you don't then don't.

we are getting it done, mostly for peace of mind.  even if someone would not end the pregnancy if they got bad results, we are both in the camp of wanting to be prepared if there was a higher likelihood of a genetic problem.  it would mean that i would deliver at a different hospital than i would now, for example.

We found out the test was covered by my insurance and had it done.  I am very happy I did.  The U/S lasted for almost 40 minutes and I got to see my baby open and close his/her mouth, flip over, and push off the walls of the uterus with its feet.  It was so awesome to see and made the pregnancy feel so much more real than the original U/S where our baby looked like a little peanut.  We could see and hear the heart, the nose, and all 5 fingers on each hand.  Some people are told to have a candy bar beforehand.  I was not told that, but went to the appointment after a work Christmas Party where a had a few cookies.  The chocolate chips must've kept the baby awake, and that was why s/he was so active.

Same reason I'm having it done. Really looking forward to seeing my baby looking like a baby.

Thanks everyone. I do want to see the baby again before my 20 week u/s. some people warned against multiple u/s being done.. Can it really do harm to the baby ? I've had 2 u/s so far.
