Would You Ever?

My name is Drew and I am expecting any day now.

My wife and I have discovered that there are a lot of choices for baby gear. Baby swings, cloth vs disposable diapers, 5 categories of strollers besides the different brands, and umpteen million baby monitors.

I know there are places that rent baby equipment to vacationers. Would anyone ever rent baby equipment to test it out to see if that is a good fit for your baby?

Thanks,
Drew

For some things that's actually a pretty good idea (provided the rental isn't a fortune). But you never, ever ever want to use a rented carseat for the same reason you would never buy a used one (you don't know the seat's history and therefore can't be sure it's actually safe to use).

I'd consider renting some items but again, you need to look at the price of renting- which can be just as high if not more. I guess it depends on what you want to rent. I wouldn't rent a carseat or a stroller, those are things that you need for a while and need to be of good quality/safety and can be an excellent investment to make your life way easier.  In the end, I probably won't rent, I would buy some things used if I found what I needed in good quality but I prefer new items that dont' have any risk of being defect (if they are new, they should be a guarnetee or a warranty), dirty, in a home with pets or smoke, etc... etc..

Not sure I would rent. I would just be worried about how safe they are and how much use they have had. Great book to look into is Baby Bargains (got mine at Barnes and Noble). That is what I used to pick out a lot of my gear. It gives consumer reviews and cost as well as safety ratings on the items that need it.  It also says what items are not necessary. The book would be a great place to start.

I wouldn't rent but I did buy my Uppababy Vista and Snugabunny rock n play off Craigslist. I'm currently searching for a high end high chair. I love Craigslist!

I think you're asking if you should consider renting items just for a day or two to test them with your baby before you make a choice on what to buy?  If so, that seems reasonable, although it's not something I ever thought of.  And might be difficult to coordinate with a newborn at home.

If you're talking about renting long term instead of buying, then no.  That would be cost prohibitive and you don't know what you're getting.

I made most of my choices based on recommendations from friends/family who were already parents.  And then accepting hand me downs.  You could always try things in the store too.  I personally think most stuff functions pretty similarly and it's just the bells and whistles that make things different.  I think most people overthink baby gear.

Yes, that is what I am referring to. :)  Thanks for your input!
