Flu Shot!

Ok ladies, I got my flu shot last month some time because my mom insisted on me getting it...I haven't had the flu in years but because of little baby Lane I decided to get it to keep me and him safe from it while pregnant. Christmas day I came down with a bad cough and by that night my back and legs were hurting so bad I couldn't sleep. Yesterday I woke up and went to work, I had to leave early went straight to the ER where they hooked me up to the heart monitor for him, an IV and admitted me for the night. I got to come home today. The stupid flu is what I have even after getting the flu shot. Just wanted you guys to be on the look out cause it really stinks. Starts out with congestion and aches, there doesn't have to be any throwing up so if you start feeling lousy just go to the doctor.

Sorry you weren't feeling good. Are you sure you had actual influenza and not just what people call "the flu"? There is a BIG difference. It sounds like maybe you were just dehydrated and that's why you needed the IV. Coughing and legs hurting aren't typical of influenza. If it was the true influenza virus you would be out a lot longer than just 2 days and would be very serious this late in pregnancy.

Also, just like any vaccination, getting the influenza vaccine doesn't make you immune to every strand of it. They change the vaccine yearly to combat the strains that they think will be the most prevalent but that doesn't mean it hits every strain out there.

I have never gotten the flu shot and I don't intend to now and my midwife supports my decision. I feel like the "flu shot" is a big deal in the states than it is in canada, and a big part of that is because medication/health care is big $$ business in the states. None of my friends got the flu shots and none that are currently pregnant intend on getting it either.

Good for you and your midwife. I'd rather get a shot and feel like crap a few days then risk getting a life-threatening disease.

They did the nose swab thing and it came back positive for the flu. They only released me today because I'm able to eat and taking fluids good. Still feel crappy. I think they kept me last night because I had a fever and was dehydrated plus they wanted to monitor him and make sure he was doing fine which he was/is!

I caught it too, even with the shot. It is miserable! My abs are so sore from all the coughing. Fluids, fluids, fluids. Did your doctor give anything for hubby? Mine put him on a low dose of tamiflu as a precaution. Feel better!!

That stinks! Glad you're getting better though! But unfortunately the flu vaccine only covers 3 of the 100s of influenza viruses. The 3 chosen by the CDC this year unfortunately aren't the only big ones. My hubby's doctor told him he's seen a lot of patients this year who have gotten the flu despite the vaccine. But like some other pp have said, I rather have the shot than risk getting what could be a very dangerous illness for me and DD.

This. If they stuck a long thing up your nose to swab and then it came back positive for influenza then you had the flu. Otherwise you were just sick, and being pregnant and sick suck balls.

You must have been unlucky enough to already have been exposed to it then b/c the vaccine is dead virus, not live.

Nothing for anyone other than me. I'm on a schedule of medicines lol. Extra strength tylenol every six hours, robitussin DM every four hours tamiflu twice a day. I feel like I need to buy one of those pill containers that have the days on it. The coughing and stuffy nose is what is kicking my butt!

Sorry to hear that.  Hopefully you will pass the immunity on to the baby!

OP, hope you feel better soon.

Although the shot doesn't protect against all strains, I got it because I feel it would be better to have some protection against the flu than none whatsoever.
