NBR: Need a good book.

So for christmas I asked for gift cards to barnes & noble for my Nook(my family asks each other what we want/would like). So I got a few of those but I need some book recommendations. I go through this everytime I buy a book. I'm really into anything as long as it keeps me turning the page. The last books I read were the 50 shades of grey trilogy. TIA :) oh and no pregnancy books please lol

One of my favorite books is The Alienist by Caleb Carr.

Its a murder mystery type of book. Takes place in NY back before we really had fingerprinting or anything like that.

Its a rather large book but very interesting if youre into that sortve thing.

Im sure you can read the description and see if its something youd be into.

I really enjoyed The Secret Life of Bees. I'm a sucker for books with strong female roles though.

I'm assuming you've already read hunger games? If you did and enjoyed them, look at the Matched trilogy and the Divergent trilogy.

I love anything by Marian Keyes or Ana Gavalda, though they are both very different.  Sky Burial, a Tibetan Love Story was good.

I just read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  It was really good, but as a warning, it does end a little abruptly.

I'm currently reading How Clarissa Burden Learned to Fly, which I really like so far.

If you like young adult books, I recommend The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and The Evolution of Mara Dyer.

Other than that I mostly read Stephen King books. :)

I don't know what you're into reading, but I'll assume you're open minded if you like 50 Shades (I haven't read it yet).  I have weird taste in books.

My recent favorite author is Sarah Waters.  I've read Fingersmith (favorite) and Tipping the Velvet so far and loved them. They're sort of historical fiction with really twisty plots and some lesbian themes.  Another that I read was The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber.   It's about a 19 year old prostitute in London in the 1800s.  It was one of the longest books I've read, but I wished it was twice as long.

Lighter reads: Water For Elephants, The Help... you've probably read them, but both good if you haven't.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

It is a story told through letters between the different characters, which I thought was really interesting. It is about a community on the island of Guernsey during the German Occupation. A book club is formed in an unintentional fashion.....

I thought it was really good.

I really want to read this one!

It's an old one...but I just read "Memoirs of a Geisha" and loved it.  "The Room" and "The Help" were great too.

I just asked for book recs on another board and was told "11/22/63", " Syndrome E", and "Cloud Atlas".  I haven't read any of them yet though....

I second the Divergent trilogy (although the 3rd doesn't come out till February).

The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta

Another Piece of My Heart by Jane Green

The Bronzehorseman by Paula Simmons (it is a trilogy but I do not recommend reading the third)

The Kommandant's Girl by Pam Jenoff

I really like Jennifer Weiner's books (except Certain Girls and The Next Big Thing)

Im reading the millennium series right now (The girl who played with fire books)  and I love them.  They are pretty intense and graphic, just a warning

If you like light reading, Emily Giffin is very good IMO (For chick lit)

Also if you like non fiction (I LOVE NON FICTION)

I really enjoyed Nickle and Dimmed, Barbara Ehrenreich (its older but well worth reading)

and then Scratch Beginnings goes kinda along with it, by Adam Sheperd

Loose Girl (cant remember authors name) is really good

Candy Girl, Diablo Cody, one of the funniest books Ive ever read

If you like funny...  I love all of Chelsea Handlers books, except the one written by her friends.

Most of what I read is "guy" reading (sci fi, satire, etc.--I never find girls in the same shelves in the library or bookstore.)  That being said, here are some of my fave authors you may want to check out:

Terry Pratchett:  (Faves include "Guards! Guards!" and "Feet of Clay,") --style is fantastical satire;

Neil Gaiman:  American Gods (style is modern fantasy)

Charles de Lint:  The Onion Girl; Spirits in the Wires (modern fantasy)

Carl Hiaasen:  Sick Puppy; Lucky You (satire)

Dan Simmons:  The Hyperion Cantos (start with Hyperion, 3 more books in series)--style is sci fi/futurist fantasy

Good luck!

I really enjoyed the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child - I think there's 10-15 in the series. On a side note, the first one is being released as a movie w/ Tom Cruise cast as the title character...which is completely wrong, but that's another vent. ;)
