FTM- Clothes Question

I just finished washing all my crib sheets so I was thinking I should start getting the clothes ready.  Do you wash all the clothes before they are born?  Also how many pair of socks do you need?

 Thx

1.  Yes, I do.  It's nice to know that they are all ready to go, put away and can just be pulled out and put on the baby.

2.  Approximately seven billion.  You'll be amazed how those things disappear.

I wash everything, car seat cover clothes etc. I'm a freak about it and it skeeves me our knowing what can be on the fabric.

And yes lots if socks, they double as mittens and they get eaten by the washer apparently or a sock monster, they vanish.

With my daughter the majority of her baby clothes were used so I made sure to have them all washed right before she came. I didn't want to wash them months and months ahead of time because then they would just be hanging in her closet collecting dust. I only took the tags off and washed her coming home outfit as far as the new clothes went, then washed the rest of the new clothes once she was home. Just in case she came out a boy or I didn't end up needing that size I didn't want to take the tags off until I was sure. You can fit a TON of baby clothes in one load of laundry too so it's not that big of a deal to do the new ones when you get home.

Last time I did.  Then DS was huge and he didn't wear half of it. Had I left the tags on some things, I'd have been able to take it back.

This time, I did wash stuff but the difference is I bought NO newborn sizes.  If I need them, I'll send someone out shopping.

I didn't have any NB size for DS1 either.  I was expecting a big baby.  He turned out to be tiny so I just had DH run out and grab a couple of NB size sleepers.  He wasn't in them long, and he was just sleeping and nursing at home, so a couple of sleepers was all we needed.

I washed everything prior and still had to run out and get newborn items for her since we assumed GD = big baby (we were wrong!).

As for socks, yes, get lots... but we found we lost a lot less if I used a delicate items/zippered laundry bag and pinned it to the hamper to use for socks/mittens/etc. I had two that rotated and they seemed to cut down dramatically on the lost sock issues.

I only washed a few things in newborn and 0-3 months sizes to get started because I didn't know what sizes we'd really need.

We probably had 10-12 pairs of socks in each size. As infants, they are more likely to lose them than get them dirty. Unless they kick into a dirty diaper as you change them.....Ick!

the cloth part of my car seat says not to machine wash... but I really want to... should I not risk it?

DS was 8lb 13oz and still wore newborn size for at least a couple weeks. I remember only washing a few of that size ahead of time, but it was nbd to have DH throw a load in as soon as we got home. As for socks, I still could always use more! Especially when they were tiny, I safety pinned socks together before washing and I stopped losing them.

You can hand wash it in gentle detergent and let it air dry. If the manufacturer says not to machine wash, I wouldn't. It would void the warranty.

This is what we did. It smelled really strongly when it came. I couldn't leave it unwashed.

Clothing is treated with chemicals so they look nicer on the rack.  You need to wash them.

And I agree with seven billion socks :) Sleepers with feet help that issue!

I washed my newborn and 0-3 outfits (plus mittens, hats, socks and sheets, blankets), but left the rest with tags on just in case that I find she doesn't like certain fits and I can return or donate them.
