mixing formula question

this is going to sound like  a stupid question, but im a ftm and not sure.

LO takes 6 oz of formula.  i mix one scoop for every two oz.  when it's all made it comes out to 7 oz, which she doesnt finish from time to time.  am i mixing this right?

i then tried to get my total of 6 oz by filling  a 5 oz bottle and putting in  two scoops and half to get my total of 6 oz. but i dont think that is right at all so i fixed it per the directions and am back to my 7 oz total.

any suggestions?  im trying to not waste formula

you were doing it right the first way. Water first, then formula. The formula adds something like .04 oz to the bottle (it says it somewhere on your container). I guess if you save leftovers in every single bottle, you coud mix extra and refrigerate and portion out bottle by bottle.  Your baby won't finish the "7" oz?

thank you.  she doesnt always finish the 7 oz.

so when i mix it per the directions is it really a 6 oz bottle (since there are 6 oz of water in it) or is it a 7 oz?

thanks for the suggestion

It's a 6 ounce bottle because it's still only 6 fluid ounces.  What you're seeing is displacement.  Think of taking an 8 ounce glass of water for yourself and crumbling crackers in it and it goes up to 9 ounces.  It's still an 8 ounce glass of water, kwim?

makes complete sense.  so that oz that is left over means she took 5 oz, not 6 due to displacement.

when making odd number of oz, can we do half scoops?  how does that work?

another stupid question

I use the "extra" as a snack bottle for times when LO stays awake for a while between feedings and needs a little something to get back to sleep.

When L was only taking three oz, I made a 6 oz bottle and poured it into two bottles and put the second one in the fridge for the next feeding. You could mix 10 oz of formula and split it into 2 bottles.

Doc browns bottles sells this pitcher you can mix an entire days worth of formula at a time. Using that you can pour 5 ounces at a time into bottles and waste less. You could also make up larger bottles and then split the formula amongst smaller bottles to waste less. It's recommended not to do half scoops usually but so many people do.

Not sure what formula you use, but I know Enfamil has a toll free number you can call to speak to someone. They are there Monday through Saturday.

I just eyeball as best I can when my son is drinking odd ounces. You can put a line on the scoop to help you. It is fine to do that.

We use this. I love this pitcher. It mixes the formula really well. We were out at the mall and I had to mix formulain the bottle. It clumped up in the nipple, got insanely foamy, it was disgusting. I will swear by this pitcher forever, I love it.
