Crib Bedding

We went to set up our registry today. Can someone tell me what we need for the crib? I put a couple of fitted sheets on there - do we still need a mattress cover?

We have a waterproof mattress cover and still use it for DS 1. Helpful for when he spits up or pees through a diaper so you only have to change the sheet and not worry about it soaking through the mattress.

We bought a few crib sheets, a bumper and a crib skirt. We didn't get a whole "set."

do I need anything fancy or will just a simple, inexpensive one work?

Simple inexpensive works! My DD's mattress is waterproof but we still have the mattress pad, its nice because it adds a little softness to the mattress.

Ditto. Pick a mattress first because a lot of them are already waterproof. We did use a soft mattress cover as well, for the same reason as above; softer and warmer under baby.

We just got a crib skirt and four sheets; two chamois sheets from PBK, which are ridiculously soft and cuddly and worth the cost; and two cotton sheets for the warmer months.

This is what we have for sheets on our registry. Tell me what you think. (also... I left my H for a few minutes, and he had added some things... I didn't want to hurt his feelings but.. he added a velour fitted sheet...necessary?)

 - Mesh bumper

- 4 fitted sheets

- 1 velour fitted sheet

- 4 piece completed sheet set

- 2 bedskirts (my H added these... I told him one is fine.. he wants a backup????)

- waterproof cotton knit crib mattress pad

I doubt you will need a back up bed skirt.

I would look into getting the Ultimate Crib Sheet by Summer Infant, it is a sheet that snaps onto the bars and has a waterproof lining on the bottom. It is super easy to change, especially in the middle of the night when LO is sick or has a leak.

This is why men shouldn't have access to changing registries.  They are clueless most of the time.

I would ditch the velour sheet, the back up skirt and the completed sheet set. You won't need the sheet set if you already have sheets, a bumper and a skirt.

We have a waterproof mattress

Really all you need is 4 or 5 max fitted sheets. The rest is just sh!t that will get dirty and need to be washed but serves absolutely no other purpose than looking cute for nursery pictures. Honestly.

^^^ what she said. My DS had reflux and these were a lifesaver. Sometimes, we would go though 2 a night so we owned 6. I plan on having one custom decorative sheet made for the crib and then buying 4 of these to start. That way, I don't have to change the regular sheet as often.

With DS we had 3 sheets. His mattress was waterproof so we didn't need a cover.

I made a crib skirt and I also made covers for the rails when he started teething.

We also used a breathable bumper, not so much for cushioning, but because he kept sticking his leg in between the slats and getting stuck. So that helped Smile

From what I read it is still beneficial to get a waterproof cover, even for a waterproof mattress. It doubles the protection, and you really don't want mold and nastiness growing inside the mattress if some does seep in.

Yes, get a mattress protector, you will use your same mattress for babies toddler bed as well. I also like the spit up protectors that lay flat on the sheet under babies head, they tie to the sides of the crib. That's up to you. I'm a STM used them with my daughter. Some moms I understand are very anti anything in the crib.

XOXO, JM
