Multiple Marker Screening / 15 week blood test

Informal survey: Did you do it?  Why/why not?

There is a part of me that doesn't want to.  I'm still undecided but need to make a decision by Jan 4th.  Nothing like waiting until the last minute.....lol

I did it because my insurance covered it. Stick out tongue Seriously though...my daughter passed at 20 weeks because of Mosaic Turner Syndrome in 2010. I didn't do any of the testing then. I am taking advantage of any testing that they offer this time. Last time it was a complete shock and I would never want to go through that again.

My OB calls it the Quad Screen.  Yes, we did it.  It's the only test we're doing.  We did it with DD1, went the NT scan route with DD2, and back to the quad.

Not sure why we even did the NT with DD2 except that it was new to our area.

BFP 2/14/08, DD1 born 10/11/08 (natural); BFP 5/16/10, DD2 born 01/12/11 (c/s, breech)
TTC #3: BFP 4/27/12, Ectopic 5/16/12 Expectant Management, 8/15/12 Cleared to TTC
BFP 9/25/12, DD3 born 6/4/13 (VBAC)

We did the genetic screening that came with the NT scan. The results were good enough that my OB won't repeat them for the quad screen, but will do a "mono screen" that looks for markers of neural tube defects. I'm doing it because I want to be as informed as possible about the baby's risks for specific disorders, especially fatal ones. I know it's not a 100% diagnostic test, but it makes me feel more comfortable moving forward. I have lots of friends that opted not to do them, however.

BFP #1: 05/07/12, MC 05/13/12. BFP #2: 07/23/12, CP 07/28/12
8dpo progesterone=5.8. Pom juice + progesterone = BFP #3 10/15/12, EDD 6/27/13

Great NT scan @11w4d, HB = 160bpm. A/S @19w6d: We're team blue!

I did it because my doctor pressured me into it. It came back 'positive' for down's syndrome (1/46 chance.) I had to wait several weeks after getting those results for a level 2 ultrasound and Harmony blood test results to find out that the baby does not have down's syndrome.

Personally I wouldn't do it again just because of the anxiety it caused me and the fact that I couldn't enjoy several weeks of my pregnancy in limbo and trying to figure out how to plan for something that I didn't know would happen or not.

I guess what I'm saying that think about what you would do/how you would feel if you got an abnormal/'positive' result, since a positive result does not mean your baby has a problem, it just means it has a higher likelihood than most babies based on statistics.

I did not do it with either pregnancy because I am unwilling to do further invasive testing such as an amnio or CVS.  I also didn't want to deal with unnecessary worry/anxiety that the PP mentioned.

They now have the Materniti21 test which is a non invasive blood test to confirm trisomies. Just wanted to clarify that CVS and amnio aren't the only choices :)

I am not doing any testing, my OB actually does not recommend it at all, because it doesn't change anything. I will love my child no matter what. With DD1 she was measuring for DS at her anatomy scan and I went for a level 2 ultrasound and all I did those few days between the USs was worry for nothing.

I did the NT scan and the sequential screen, and I would again.

People like to say "I would love my child anyway" if they choose not to do it, but that makes it sound like the only option is termination if you get certain results, which isnt true.  I didnt do it because I wouldnt love my child.  I did it because certain outcomes would change my prenatal care, what OB I went to, and even where I would deliver the baby.  Certain conditions would require certain specialists to be waiting at the birth of the baby. Also, if the baby did in fact have a lethal condition and wouldnt make it, I would like to know to prepare for it.

There is no right or wrong decision when it comes to the testing, but there are many other reasons to have it done besides terminating.

This is my biggest reason for hesitating in the first place.......

Wow.  I'm so sorry.  I can see why this would be motivator....

I can understand some people wanting to skip testing, in order to avoid the whole anxiety issue with a possible false positive, or because they feel it wouldn't change anything for them if the child did have an issue.

But personally, I would rather know in advance, instead of finding out without warning on the child's birthday. If there's an issue, I want to understand the problem and have time to prepare. A child with a syndrome or defect of some kind might need special care from me and my husband. Or they might need special care from a doctor. I'd want to be ready to give that baby everything he or she needed, not be scrambling around at the last minute.

I did it, the test came back with a 1 in 20 chance of Down's and we had to wait 3 weeks for the amnio, and then another week for the results.  It came back negative, and even though termination was never an option for us, it was a tremendously anxiety-ridden month, and in my opinion, I would never do it again. I didn't sleep for 4 weeks, it was all I could think about, it was REALLY hard.  But I completely understand why people would make both decisions - it's very personal, but I would have never considered fully the impact of what would happen with an abnormal result until this experience.

I had the quad screen and it was normal. I am waiting on the results of the DNA testing they doen thru my blood (I am assuming this is the Harmony test). I am freaked out. It was ordered due to an abn spot on the u/s.
