Controversial question

Hi ladies,

2 questions: I know this is controversial, I'm not trolling, please don't flame.

I'm a first time mother and my lo, Skye is a tiny little thing, 5lb, 11" so her crib seems HUGE to her and see won't sleep in it.  We bought her a bassinet, but it has mesh sides and I'm concerned about smothering, my husband is not.  should I be worried?

2nd question is along the same vein.  Are mesh liners safe for cribs?  We're afraid she'll still be small enough to fit her head through the bars even when she's big enough to sleep in the crib.

my lo is tiny too 6.14lbs and his bassinet seems huge as well. at this point they arent going to be moving much when sleeping.  we swaddle the lil man at night, and put him in the middle, so theres definitely little movement unless he gets an arm free :)

as far as the mesh liners for cribs, we used them with DD. if i remember correctly we weaved it through the bars.

hope this helps!! and congrats :)

Your bassinet should be fine. Your LO won't be moving around much right now, especially if you swaddle!

I wasn't going to use bumpers at all in our crib. My LO is very small as well, he only weighs 14 pounds and he'll be 7 months old on tuesday! He is still sleeping in his PNP in our room, but he naps in the crib. He moves ALL OVER that crib now! and almost every day he's woken from his nap with a leg stuck in the slats of the crib and he screams his head off. (He also throws his pacifier in the floor almost every nap.) So I broke down and bought a mesh bumper last weekend. Its doing its job of keeping arms and legs and pacifiers in. *shrug*

How old is your crib? Cribs that were manufactured recently have strict specifications regarding the spacing of the slats. Below is from thebabydepartment.com re: slat spacing current standards:

"Crib slats should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart to prevent your baby from slipping through the slats. The easiest way to check the spacing of the crib slats is to attempt to pass a soda pop can between the slats. Properly spaced slats will not allow the soda pop can to pass through the slats."

I highly doubt your LO's head is smaller than a soda can. If you have an older crib, you should check all current specs to make sure your crib is safe.

It's a new crib so I'm not worried about her head getting stuck, my hubby is though and I can't convince him otherwise, he won't see that it can't happen.  My fear is the mesh liners.
