Agatha vs. Athena

I'm still early and have plenty of time but I'm starting to think about our lists. Athena has been on my girl list for a while and one of the names I like the most, but often when I think of it or try and say it Agatha comes to my mind instead. I can't decide if I like it or not. In a way, I love it because I never hear it, but does it sound to old? I would appreciate your opinions. Thanks!

I prefer Athena. It seems fresher and less clunky than Agatha.

I unquestionably like Athena.

Agatha reminds me of Mrs. Trunchbull, the villain in Matilda.

I love Agatha, but I have Agnes on my list since it is a family name. I love how underused they both are. I do wonder whether Aggie as a NN will blend in with all the Maggies and Addies.

I vote Athena. IMO, I think Agatha sounds a bit harsh.

Agatha does not sound pretty to me. Athena isn't my style either, but I much prefer it over Agatha. Also, those who say Aggie is a cute NN, it is urban slang for aggravating. My students use it all of the time:  "Oh, he's so aggie!" so on and so forth. I guess it wouldn't bother you if you hadn't been around it, but it's all I can think of when I hear it.

This is probably a regional thing, but growing up in MD, I played Black Aggie at one too many sleepovers. Agatha instantly reminds me of that, even though the legend isn't even derived from the name Agatha. I'd vote for Athena.

I think that they're both nice names. :)

Aggie is a cute NN for Agatha.

I like Agatha because it's an old name not used so much. I can't explain why I don't like Athena, but I feel like if I knew someone who named their kid that I would say: Athena, really?

I love Agatha. I'm due in 6 weeks, and have been pushing to use Agatha since day one, but my husband won't agree. I think it's a beautiful, unique name that will serve a child well throughout adulthood, too.
