Schedules

When is it appropriate to start a feeding schedule?  My LO is nine weeks and her eating is so eratic.  Sometimes every two hours and other times is it as much as wevery four hours.  Also she is eating about 4-6 ounces each time. Is this just something we have to ease into or should she still be feeding on demand?

Try feeding every three hours. It might take a week or so, but if you cut back from 4 by an hour you theoretically could gain it from the other direction and not have so many 2 hour intervals.

My son just turned 12 weeks and he eats 5 times a day, between 5-6 am, between 10-11am, between 2 and 3pm and between 6 and 7pm. He then sleeps from 8 or 8:30 till 5-something. His daytime schedule has been the same since he was about 8 weeks old, and he only recently dropped his midnight feeding. He gets 6oz a time. I would start trying to give her 6oz each feeding and then going at least 2.5 hours between feedings. Try feeding her 2.5 hours and see if she'll take it. If she does, feed her as much as you can and then hold off for another 2.5 -3 hours if she'll let you.

During the day my DS goes 2.5 to 3 hours at a time (hence the variation in the time of feedings.) Don't stress too much about it though. Let her lead you. She's not going to let you let her starve. :) I'm not worrying about putting DS on a "strict" feeding schedule till he's about 6 months old and we start introducing him to solids.

She should still be eating on demand. they go through growth spurts and their needs change so frequently that young. Just try to go with it, it does get better.

Yes, continue to feed on demand. Like the previous poster said, babies this young are developing and growing incredibly fast and their food intakes varies daily, sometimes varies within the day (goes 4 hours one time, 2 hours the next). Right now you are building trust with your LO so when she is hungry she needs to know that you will meet her needs. Not only that, it will just make your life miserable listening to her cry when she is hungry and she still has an hour left before he next scheduled feeding. And yes, it DOES get better. My LO was an erratic eater for the first 8 weeks. Now he is pretty scheduled at 3.5 to 4 hours during the day but he does have random days where he eats a little more. He's just growing more that day :)
