If you DO care about popularity/rankings

Where is the line drawn for you on the names you will or will not use? Nothing in the top 500? Top 300? Top 100? Top 10? etc..or do you go more by names of people you know IRL, regardless of what the "offical" ranking is?

And if you do care about popularity, are there other things more important to you, like meaning, how much you love a name, etc, that would make you willing to overlook a name you found uncomfortably popular (whatever that means to you)?

Just curious :)

I like unique names but not yooneek or whatever :P  Meaning plays a small part, I obviously don't want to give my kiddo a name that means something I'm against or just flat out hate :]

I definitely don't want top 100.

I've been trying to stay out of top 500 at least.  I check the social security website to see if my choices are on there too.

With our first, if I found the name on a keychain, cup or anything along those lines, it was off the list.

I guess if it came down to it and I found one I absolutely LOVED and then later found out it was in a top ranking, I might use it.  I doubt it will, but stranger things have happened

I'd prefer to stay out of the top 200, but two of our top names, George (#165) and Margaret (#187) are ranked higher. They are family names though so that makes us over look the high ranking.

My preference would be Gregory (#279) or Magdalena (#1159.)

Our DSs were ranked #301 and #670 in the years they were born.

I guess it doesn't bother me as much as perceived trendiness. I suppose that Ruby or Simon might seem trendy, as the trend seems to be to use more classic names, but that's a trend I'm ok with. Ruby is ranked something like #26 in my state and I'm ok with it.

EDIT: LOL read the question wrong, but there's my .02 anyway

Well, I try to keep out of the top 100 mostly, top 500 is fine, top 10 no way, and definitely away from any names that seem trendy so they aren't dated. I love a name that is easily recognizable and people know how to pronounce/spell, but there won't be lots of others around.

My 3 from my first marriage (all born in the 90's) are Gregory, Hillary and Breanna. They've never had another in their classes so I'm happy.

However, if fi and I ever have a boy our name will be Anthony despite the popularity (it's like #11 I think). That was the name of his brother who died tragically as a child and he's always wanted to name a son Anthony. That trumps my 100 rule by far!

Popularity and rankings mean a lot to me because I grew up with a really common, trendy name while my 3 sisters all have uncommon names. They are constantly complimented on their names, but no one has ever once told me they like my name. I also hated being known by my last initial all through school.

Now that I have an extremely common married name, I try not to go any higher than the top 300, but prefer to stay out of the top 500. I try to think about not just what is most popular, but also what will likely become more popular in the near future.

I do agree with a PP though that trendiness is also a factor. I much prefer classic. And I don't care as much about the popularity of the MN. Also, I would never choose a name just to be "unique"... there has to be real meaning to it and I would really like to use family names.

Yep, I get it. I was known by my first AND last name throughout all of middle and high school! I agree too- the name has to be special, and not just unique for the sake of being unique.

For me I definitely want out of the top 50, the name we chose (Lydia) is #96 (#104 in our state) and while I went to high school with a Lydia, I don't know any others in real life.

For me popularity is kind of important, but names that are trendy (became super popular all of a sudden and will probably drop off just as quickly) are ones I really shy away from. Some popular names are just classic names that are awesome, so lots of people use them.

For me alone, out of top 100. The farther away the better. DH is set on William if we ever have another boy, after his grandfather and it's such a classic name I've come to peace with it. Elizabeth is a strong contender if we have 2 or more girls. Again, a classic and family name for DH. If it were me alone then I could never use it as a first name. I grew up with a few girls who had names really close to mine. I wouldn't do the same name or close name of a child that is already in my "group" for that reason, though of course the group is ever expanding so there is no guarantee. I woyldn't assume just because I knowno young William or Elizabeths, as an examole, that they're not popular and that there might not be more than one in their class/grade level.

I think out of top 100 in the state rankings. I also try to avoid names that are rapidly rising in the rankings. My greatest fear is using a top 300, top 500 name and have it end up top 10 in the next few years. Liam was on our list for years, and I always planned to use it for a boy as it was never popular. Now I'm SO glad DD was a girl!

Definitely not in the Top 100. I'd prefer if it had the same origin as the rest of our names, or as my heritage.

Our girl name was perfect, but since we are having a boy, I am completely at a loss.

this is me! Our top 2 names are currently in the 400s but are both becoming more popular rapidly and are on Namberry's top naming trends. Boooo

I have nine children. 5 of my children arent in the top 1000.

3 are hovering around 300-400 but I have met very very few. One or two max.

My ninth is Noah. Yeah. Its #5. I like the name (it was in the 30's when we picked it) but there are a LOT of them. It probably contributed to my choosing far less common names for my later kids (he is #3 of 9).

It matters to me somewhat. All my top girl names are 300 or higher but I love some popular classics like Katherine and Elizabeth and wouldn't veto based just on numbers. Boy names are harder since I prefer classic names and it seemed like the boy pool is smaller. My boy choices are all above 50. I don't have a set rule but I tire of names I hear over and over. I won't consider names that have boomed recently because they seem the most likely to feel dated in a few years. I still managed to choose a combo with a booming middle name and a fn I see here all the time. Oh well.

No top 100 for a first name, but maybe a middle name. I'm more comfortable in the 200-300 range, but my official "rule" is no top 100. I don't think anything- meaning, love of the name, etc- would change my mind. I'm a Brittney born in 1990 and I do not want that for my kids.

I could probably quote a line or two from each of these replies and agree with them.

We have narrowed our DD's name list down to two: #1 Sophia/Sofia and #751 Livia.  Our last name is Italian and we are choosing Italian names/spellings so it narrows things down immensely.  That said, as much as I love love love Sofia it has this tainted quality because of ranking.

I agree with the popularity vs. trendy argument.  If we do choose Sofia, it will be because we love it the most, it's classically beautiful but not trendy.

When I named my daughter Ava, 13 years ago...........it was around 300. 5 years later it was in the top 10 and has been ever since. You really never know what a name will do...........so I think the most important thing, is to completely love the name and put less worry into where it sits on the list .

I love some of the top 10 names, but I went in planning to avoid the top 50. We almost went with Audrey, though, which was 43 last year. We ended up with Elinor nn Nora. Eleanor is ranked 150 and Nora 137, though I expect that both will move up a bit in 2012 if their popularity on the Bump is any indication.

Meaning matters to me in the way that if it has a truly negative meaning, I won't use it. Like Mallory. Very pretty name (IMO), but I wouldn't use it because of the meaning (ill-omened).

ETA: My current "would be kids names" are Miriam #342 and Duncan #799.

Same here.

As for popularity, I tend to go with how many people I know with that name IRL. If it's under 2, it's good enough for me. Over 5, it's off the list.

And if I don't know anyone with that name, then it's ON. Which it absolutely is right now! ;)

I think for me, I could use a name in what ever top ranking...if I loved it enough. My favorite girl name is Emmalynn (Emma is top 10 I know... and I think Emmalynn (although spelled differently) is top 100?)

The most important thing in a name for me is the sound of it and also meaning (although I have no idea what Joseph means :\. I'm gonna look it up as soon as I finish with this post :).

I hate the Aiden/Brayden/Jaiden names. And preppy boy names like Landon...I like religious boy names like Benjamin, Moses, Luke (I like Lucas more though), Michael, Ezra, etc.

I'm not sure what "category" of girl names I like. I like E names...but not as many religious names as I do like religious boy names...ETA: I guess I like very different girl names...I like Eden and Anais too.
