XP: Iron pills

Do they make anyone else really sick? I was taking the slow release kind with dinner, and a few hours later would get incredibly nauseous and sweaty, and vomited once. I took a break from them for a few weeks and was fine, but I'm going to try to start taking them again. Any suggestions?

I take mine with a glass of milk in the mid morning or afternoon.  Anytime I took them with food or on an empty stomach I got really sick.  Typically I take mine about 2 hours after I breakfast.

It helps me to drink tons of water through the day.

DO NOT take them right before bed!!  Even if I didn't vomit I would wake up and dry heave (even though my dr told me that was the best time to take them).

The break might not have helped you any, either.  I notice that if I forget a day the next dose always sits harder.  So, it might be a good idea to get yourself in a routine so your body gets used to it.

Thanks for the advice!  I'm going to try to take them earlier in the day in between meals with a small snack or milk like you said.  They made me feel sooooo sick though; I'm not looking forward to it.  These troublemaker babies of mine, making me anemic and all.  :)

No, don't take them with milk.  The calcium blocks uptake.  Take them with OJ or something else that contains C.  Take your prenatal and any calcium containing foods at a different time.  Some people find they can sleep through the nausea, so that is why bedtime is recommended and worth experimenting with. Other posters have said they found lower dose pills more often, or some other form like drops that they found to be less harsh.  I recall they actually could get prescriptions or just ordered some version meant to be easier on the stomach and liked them.   I take my iron about once every 3rd day and otherwise try to get it from my diet.  You can find the iron content of foods online and other advice about how to best get your body to absorb what you eat.

My doctor told me specifically NOT to take the iron supplement with milk, but to take with OJ or water.  The calcium inhibits the absorption of iron.  I generally take my iron pill in the morning with OJ, and then eat breakfast.  If your supplement is making you sick, then maybe try taking a lower dose pill more times per day.

Very glad I'm following this post.  My Dr never said anything about NOT taking them with milk.  These days a glass of milk is all that helps my heartburn and nausea, but I never thought to ask if it was okay to take at the same time as the iron.

Sorry for my misinformed advice OP.

You can try floradix. It's a liquid supplement and is easier on the stomach. I couldn't handle the taste of it but I know it's popular.

My midwife gave me a month's worth of samples of Isopran, a prescription Iron supplement. I take it in the morning and have not noticed any side effects at all. Maybe you could talk to your provider about it.

Not sure how long you had been taking the supplement, but it took my body about 2 weeks to get used to the increased iron. I take Vitron-C which is high potency, but supposedly easier on the stomach. I take it at night after after dinner, and my regular prenatal in the morning with breakfast.

yes vit c helps absorb iron, calcium blocks so make sure you aren't taking calcium supplements at the same time either

Thanks for all the advice everyone!  I'm going to talk to my doctor about a lower dose.

Yea, its best to take it in between meals with a glass of OJ. I take mine about 2 hours after lunch and never feel nauseous.

Last time around I had an ice obsession, which I found out was iron related. I would just take my pill before bed and never had any nausea issues. The ice cravings have started again this time around so I imagine I'll be back on the iron pills soon, yay!

I've never had a problem with iron pills, but when pregnant I was cautious about this do to the possibility of morning sickness.  I take my iron before bed (with grapefruit just)... that way if I feel nauseous, I sleep through it!

I also try to eat an iron rich diet to help with this.

Good luck!
