So annoyed at the cake...

Last night, we had a xmas get together with DH side of the family.  I mentioned to her that my BFF and Step-mom had picked 3/3 for my shower, so please keep it open.  She then insisted on making the cake.  Back story - she used to have a cake business and always insists on making cakes for everyone's special events.  Thing is...my hosts want to do a sweets table for the intimate shower of 20 and not a big cake.  The Aunt is so overwhelming and acts like a child when she doesn't get her way...I know it is up to the hosts to deal with her, but I just feel horrible that they have to.

Can't Overwhelming Auntie's cake be a part of the sweets table? I mean, its a sweet right?

Let her make the cake.  Just tell her it's only for 20 people so maybe she'll make it on the smaller side, but I don't see how a cake detracts from a sweets table.

AND it gives people a choice - if someone really wants cake, they have that option.

I bet that cake will be gorgeous.

I'd just say "Awesome, the shower is only about 20 people and I know the host is planning a whole table of various desserts, so keep it on the small side, I bet it will be beautiful!"

Or you could also suggest that she make teacakes or cupcakes or petit fours instead.

If she wants to make a cake, why not let her? It's not going to ruin the sweets table to have an extra sweet.

I'm never annoyed by free cake. I think it's a nice gesture! since she is a former baker, she may feel like this is her special way to contribute without having to spend a ton of money.

How dare she offer to make you a cake?
Really, this sounds like a nonproblem. Let her make a cake, or your hostesses can tell her they don't want it. Why would this be something to get worked up over?

It's just cake.  No reason to get worked up about it.  Let her put it on the sweets table with the other sweets and don't worry about it.  I bet some of your guests might even enjoy it.

I like the idea of a small cake in addition to the sweets table - I think I was more crabby after a long day when I posted.  It is truly a sweet gesture.  Thanks for the input.

I am a sucker for a good cake. Its one of the things I look forward to at a shower. You can drop it off at my house if you don't want it. ;-)

This is exactly what I was going to say. I'm a pastry chef and I always love to make beautiful cakes for special occasions. But I try and keep it appropriate, so the teacakes/cupcakes or peiti fours are a fantastic idea.'

But if you are really that worried then talk to your hostess about it and give them a heads up. GL!

if she insists on making a cake. ask her to make a beautifully decorated  6" cake to use as the centerpiece of the dessert table.

Yes this! I'm sure it will be gorgeous, your aunt will get to contribute AND it's one less thing for your hostess to worry about. I would just say to your hostess that your aunt would love to make a small cake and have them chit chat about what she would like.

I was going to say the same thing.

I'm sure the cake will be beautiful.  Tell her how many people are going to be at the shower and ask her to downsize the cake from what she usually makes.

Have the cake and sweets table.  They can get cute to go containers and the sweets can be part of the favors.

Maybe she could make cupcake favors or cake pops for guests to take home?

I love cake. Anytime I am at a shower/wedding/function and I see the hosts went with various desserts and not an actual cake, a part of me is always a little disappointed. Not sure why, guess I have never really been a pie candy or cookie girl.  That being said, go for it, take her up on the offer!  It's not a huge deal, and totally won't detract from the theme.  Maybe ask her to do a mini cake an explain that there will be more than plenty sweets available so no need for anything large.
