Very odd question for those who have already given birth....

This is going to sound strange to most, but I have a condition called, "emetophobia." Basically, it's an extreme, irrational fear of vomiting. Thankfully, I made it through MS without actually getting sick. But, I'm becoming anxious as I approach the birth of our first child, because I do realize that many women vomit during labor. Is there anyone out there who made it through without getting sick? I know it seems silly, in the grand scheme of things. But, to me..it's very frightening.

I didn't vomit during labor. I did 10 hours with no meds and 4 with the epidural and had a vaginal birth.

I actually don't know anyone who has vomited during labor.

I had a non-medicated birth at a birthing center, and I only threw up once -- when I was maybe 5cm and trying to get in the car. I think it might have had something to do with drinking too much water beforehand -- no issues after that.

Really? I vomited all the way through. The way my nurse talked it sounded pretty common.

I got sick, but only once, and only right before I delivered her. It's one of those situations where it was the last thing on my mind. She was coming out in a matter of minutes, I puked, then I pushed, then there she was.

I know fears are usually irrational, so there's no talking you out of being scared. Just know that IF it happens to you, it will happen quickly and it will be over just as quickly, and you'll have better things to focus on.

Sure ya do, you just didn't know it!

OP, I did puke. I had an induced labor, which was hard and fast. I would strongly suggest an epi. I think that would help prevent it.

This might not make you feel better right now, but I can pretty much gaurantee being spread eagle while half naked in a room full of people will take your mind off of vomitting.

Giving birth is very "all consuming". You won't care that strangers can see you naked.  You won't care that you will have more hands up your ho-ha than most porn stars. You won't even are if you poop in front of everyone.  You will be so wrapped up in the actual birth process that vomitting won't even rank in the top 10 things on your mind.

I had an emergency c/s and I did throw up.  Twice.  On DH.  I don't mean a little got on DH, I mean I full on vomitted on the man.  Normally I would be mortified, but at that time it barely regisitered.

I didn't vomit, but it is common, especially with unmediated labors and during transition.

Talk to your OB before hand. Is this something that anti-anxiety meds can help? Would it help for your nurses to know what to expect and clean it up/get it out of sight as quickly as possible? I'd bring it up to your OB at your next appointment and come up with a plan you feel comfortable with.

Im sorry this is an issue for you that's causing anxiety about labor. I hope you can get it sorted out quickly so you don't have to stress about it anymore.

I did throw up during labor but from everyone I've talked to it doesn't sound that common. I will tell you that it was really the last thing on my mind. It sounds like you have an intense fear of it so could you maybe do some visualizations or something before birth to prepare yourself in case you do throw up. It could help you see in a rational light that it's not actually a very big deal (although I get that it seems like that to you).

I never felt nauseous nor threw up during labor. I labored unmedicated for 13 hours then with epi for 6, then pushed for 3.5. I got slightly nauseous right after my unplanned c/s because I was shot up with a ton of morphine, but they gave me something extremely fast to make it go away because they didn't want me to strain after surgery.

I don't know anyone personally who vomited during labor, medicated or unmedicated. I'd say it's pretty uncommon. If I were you, I'd talk to my nurse and OB as soon as I got to the hospital to make sure they understood my condition and had something on hand in case I got nauseous.

I had an epidural with both kids and I didn't vomit with my first but I did with my second (I think possibly because I had crazy low blood pressure, too).  They can easily give you drugs to prevent the nausea that often accompanies some of the drugs they administer.  I would talk to the nurse about it and I don't think it would be a big deal to give you some Phenergan.  If you did get sick, I think that's what they would automatically give you so maybe you can ask for it in advance??

I've given birth twice.  My first delivery I threw up twice - once during pushing (I had pit and and epi) and then again during my c/s.  It wasn't like I was nauseated for awhile, it just came on me out of the blue both times.

My second pregnancy - a unmedicated VBAC, I did not throw up.  I wasn't nauseated at all.

I didn't vomit during L&D either time, though I felt like I was going to with one of my c-sections.

I got sick twice, but I am pretty sure it was due to the nubain they gave me. It made me feel wonderfully drunk then I barfed. I did throw up one other time I think but it was after my epidural sometime. I hadn't eaten in over 24 hours so that could have had something to do with it too! Good luck!

I did get sick...but I am convinced it was due to the antacid medication they gave me.  It was a drink and I vomited repeatedly within a half hour afterwards.  The nurse did act like it was very common to vomit during labor.
