Hospitals with "Baby Friendly" designation?

My MIL is an IBCLC and works for a hospital system that is applying for "Baby Friendly" certification through some accrediting body (www.babyfriendlyusa.org).  She wanted me to ask "on those message boards" if anyone has heard of Baby Friendly, if your hospitals are "Baby Friendly," or if you specifically sought out that qualification, etc.

Ironically, neither hospital where DH and I live is "Baby Friendly."

The hospital where I work has a baby friendly designation, which is the only reason I've ever heard of it. They're in the process of recertifying. I think it's a great thing for hospitals to do, because it involves a certain amount of change in the culture, and really encourages staff to do everything they can to support mom's efforts to breastfeed.

I'm not really sure how many people are even aware it's a thing, though.

I have heard of it and both the hospital I had my DS at and the hospital I will be delivering at this time are designated as baby friendly. We didn't seek it out but I found it nice. Especially since I could ask any nurse a breastfeeding question since there weren't any LC's that came to see me (we were in during the weekend).

I have never heard of this but the hospital I'll deliver at (and where I delivered DS) is on the list. Just reading the description I thought, "oh, my hospital was totally baby-friendly" but didn't know what it was before this post.

I'd never heard of it. My local hospital is not, though I bet it would qualify. My high risk hospital is.

My hospital is "striving to obtain baby friendly status" and based on their website (we haven't done a tour yet) they already have good initiatives in process. It seemed like it was mainly about promoting BFing, so I don't know if it means anything else.

I had never heard of it and in looking at the list it doesn't look like htere are any baby friendly hospitals in PA.  The hospital where I deliver has a reputation for being pro breast feeding etc...which was a consideration for me so I guess if I had a choice between baby friendly and not hospitals it might be a consideration for me.

yes, the hospital I had DS at is baby friendly and is one of only 4 in my state.  The LC's talked about it quite a bit when they were working with me.  They were really proud of it and it went well with the philosphy of BF'ing.

The hospital I delivered DS at was working towards it at the time. I didn't really have any options in terms of where I delivered so I couldn't seek it out, but it wouldn't have been on the top of my list if I had. BFing was absolutely important to me (we actually didn't really have the option of it not working out) but i knew my aunt, who is an IBCLC, would be visiting us in the hospital and frequently thereafter so I felt like I had all the support I needed.

Had I not had my aunt to fall back on, I would have placed a lot more importance on the designation.

Never heard of it, my hospital is not, and I don't plan to seek out a different one.

My hospital was very BFing friendly; it seemed like every nurse was extremely knowledgeable about how to help me and baby whether they were or weren't certified LCs. I was very happy with the experience. Sounds like an interesting and helpful initiative, though.

My OB delivers at two hospitals, one of which has the "baby-friendly" designation. It was a factor in choosing that hospital. I had not heard of the certification before looking into the hospital though.

I checked the site and mine is not, but they pretty much do all the things that this website talks about.  They are really pro-BFing, skin-to-skin for at least an hour is standard, they don't push meds or immunizations (they let you talk to your Pedi about all of that).  They did have pacis available in the room, but they never gave them to DD--they were just there if we wanted them.  LCs came to our room every day and more if I asked.  And around here there are not nurseries--the babies are always rooming in with the parents.

Mine's not on the list, but I was pleasantly surprised at my first OB visit to see signs up in the hallways and bathrooms about the importance of breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact post-delivery (they've even started doing it for c-sections). That made me feel a lot more confident in my hospital choice.

The hospital that I work at and had my son (and this baby) is baby friendly. We have been since 2008. The last stat I saw earlier this fall said that only 6% of all hospitals country wide are baby friendly. I would LOVE to see more become BF.

I think the only reason I'd heard of this was through Ina May's book.  Or at least a very similar program.  My local hospital isn't listed on that website, but it does say that it's part of a new program for "Best Fed Beginnings" - which is very pro-breastfeeding.  In doing so, they say they're working very closely with Baby Friendly USA - so maybe they're on their way?

None of the hospitals in my area are listed as Baby Friendly, so I don't really have a choice either way ;-)

I have never heard of this.  One hospital in our area is on the list, but it is interesting because everyone I know that has delivered at that one has formula fed.

The hospital I deliver at is not on the list but seems to meet most of the standards.  Babies are given to mother's immedately after birth unless they need suctioning or special care and skin to skin and nursing are encouraged immediately.  All of the nurses are also lactation consultants and there is  free lactation consultation throughout the stay.  Babies can room-in and parents are encouraged to keep the baby in with them.  Pacifiers are only given with parental permission and formula is syringe fed if the baby needs it but is also breastfeeding.  We were not given any formula samples.  I can't think of any other way the hospital could have supported breastfeeding.

I swear my hospital was in 2011 when I had DS, but I don't see it on the list, maybe they didn't renew their license. It was great when I was there though, all the nurses were trained in BFing support, there was a LC available 24 hours a day, and they asked if I wanted skin to skin after he was delivered

Never heard of it, and I'm a bit skeptical.  Some of the best hospitals in the country are in the Boston area and only one Boston hospital is on the list.

The hospital I deliver at is "Baby Friendly" but I didn't know what it meant until I saw their marketing material promoting the designation.
