newborn bottles

I know it varies by baby - any suggestions what to start out with? My name brand choices are Avent, Medela, Dr Browns, Born Free, Evenflo, Nuby, and Vital Baby

Currently, I just have the Avent 4 oz newborn flow on the registry. Anyone want to weigh in on this?

Are you planning to BF or FF? I got the little Medela storage bottles with my pump and used them pretty much the entire time my daughter used bottles. She rarely had more than 5 oz at a time (she really only had milk when I would be gone for short periods of time though), which is what the little bottles held. We also had the Ventair bottles which my husband really liked and he was the only one feeding her bottles. I should add that I didn't have a picky girl when it came to that so I think she would have drank out of anything.

WE used Avent with DS and loved it. It made switching back and forth between the boob and bottle easy. We will be using them with this baby too. I got a starter kit at walmart for $20.

We only used Dr. Browns. They were great however, there are too many pieces to wash so we will be switching this time around.

If you're going to try BFing, Avent is a good choice. They are good when you wanna go back and forth. I would rate Evenflo as second, and Medela as third.

I'm a FTM so I have no experience but Dr. Browns and Tommie Tippie were recommended to me so I put those on the registry.

We had great luck with Tommee Tippee but I see that brand isn't on your list.  I would just get a couple bottles early on and you can always go grab a few more if necessary.  SIL went through what seemed like every bottle brand out there for her 3rd LO in order to find one he'd take.

I stayed home with DS#1 for 6 months and EBF during that time, but when I went back to work, I used Dr. Browns.  I liked them and they seemed to work, but the parts were a little annoying.  I haven't thought that far this time :)

We used Dr. Brown's with DS and will use them again (fingers crossed LO wil like them). Yes, there are a number of pieces, but I didn't find it that annoying to wash them out.

We are going with Tommee Tippee.  I have a couple of friends that swear by them on advice from the same LC who is like the BFing guru in my area.

I registered for two kinds, playtex ventair and Dr. Brown's I only opened one box at a time and tried the playtex ones first. After realizing my DD didn't care for those I opened the Dr. Brown's one and we both fell in love. I formula fed and I would say use the dr. brown's ones. I think many FTM(many of my friends warned me of this because they did it) mistakes are sometimes being over prepared on the bottles and then they have 5 different types of bottles opened and the kid will only use one or two of the types and then the parents can't return the opened unused ones.

We used Dr. Browns for DS when I went back to work and he got pumped milk. Never had any problems with them but they were a PIA to clean. I used to bring the dirties home from daycare because I was worried that they wouldn't clean them right.

I'm planning on picking up a pack of them for this baby just in case.

the recommendation I received was to put several "starter packs" of different brands on my registry and to open them one at a time till I find something LO likes. Then to return the rest and use that $ to buy ones I know she'd like! SIL did this and she got lucky - first box of advent worked!

We used Avent with DS and had no problems.

I also like that they had add on attachments - handles, a sippy cup type spout, etc so you get more mileage out of them.

I love my boys! (DS, Furbaby, and DH)

There is a new one coming out that is going to be really breastfeeding baby friendly. It's called the Bare by Bittylab. Created by a mom and really helps keep babies breastfeeding longer when they have to have bottles while mom is at work, or to encourage breastfeeding after mom has been on antibiotics, or other health reasons, etc. It is also great for colicy babies. The early research on them is really interesting and I can't wait to finally get mine. They will be in 4oz and 8oz.

It is to be released before we have our babies but they haven't gotten them out there yet. Check out their website for details at http://bittylab.com/

My two lactation consultants said Medela was a bad brand of bottle to use if you plan to breastfeed at all, due to the poor creation of the bottle nipple (which didn't mimic the curvature of a breast nipple at all). I used Nuk bottles with DD and she loved them. I plan to do the same with DS if he likes them as well. I had Brown's but there were too many pieces and more of a nuisance than anything.

Do they still make playtex drop ins? That's what we used for DD and I love them. I still have all of the bottles/rings left, was just planning to buy new nipples, since it's been 5 years.

When I was nursing, we used Medela. I tried to use Avent, but I had a lot of issues with them leaking. I ended up having to switch DD over to formula and LOVED Dr. Brown's. There are several pieces to them, but I really didn't think they were that big of a PITA to clean.

I'm looking at Avent myself. I love the fact it's BPA-free and made in the UK (Dr. Browns is made in USA but I don't see the flexibility like Avent has). Their storage containers can be used as bottles too because the lids can be switched out. We are going to alternate between breast and bottle because my husband will be staying home on his day off and my mom is taking care of her one day a week and then I'll be home the other three days working from home. Since the storage containers with Avent are small, I can easily put them in a mini fridge in my office at work.

I used Breast Flow and Avent.  I EBF so and DD never took more than 4 oz so I only bought the small size of the bottles and never moved up the nipple flow.

I really liked the Avent bottles, they attached to my pump (Avent Double Electric), cleaned easily and are now DD's sippy cups.

Now I am realizing that you will most likely be FF and my info isn't very helpful!  I still recommend Avant for their flexibility into sippy cups.
