Cozette Concerns

Hello everyone,

We are expecting a baby girl in March! I like uncommon names. We have liked the name Cozette for years, but with the release of Les Miserables I'm afraid the name Cosette is going to become popular. Or that everyone will think I named her after the character in the book/movie.

By the way, I do like the spelling with a z instead of an s. And I am aware of the "negative connotations" the name has in France or to French people.

Does anyone foresee Cosette/Cozette becoming a popular or trendy name?

I doubt it will, but either way you should name her Cozette if that's what you like. HTH!

Cosette its self has been around for centuries, ( the actual book by Victor Hugo was published circa 1860's)there was not an abundance of people being named Cosette when Les Mis came to broadway in 1987, I do not think it will this time around.

I don't think it will become too popular.  The only time I have ever heard it was for a dog - it was Adrianna's dog's name on the Soprano's (random, I know!)

Wasn't the name Cosette created for Les Mis? So in that sense, yes, I do associate the name only with the character. I'm not saying that's a dealbreaker--my son is Atticus, which is pretty much the same deal.

I would not spell it with a z--that just looks silly.

ETA: Whoops, I forgot to answer the original question. I doubt it will become popular/trendy.

I don't think it will be too popular with the movie release.  The book has been out forever.

From what I understand the name Cosette/Cozette was a nickname or pet name for Nicole before Les Miserables was written.

I normally don't like z's because they can come across as harsh sounding, but I rather like it for this name.

By the way, I adore the name Atticus. Even with the unavoidable reference to the book it is a fantastic name. The character Atticus is so admirable in the book (in my opinion) it's almost a bonus!

Hmm.. this interesting.  Behindthename lists Cosette as having been created by Hugo for Les Mis (much the way Shakespeare made up names).  I've never heard the nickname for Nicole history, but it's interesting!

But, back the point, I'd think you named your daughter after Les Mis and spelled it incorrectly (sorry!).  There have been versions of Les Mis made before, so I don't consider this special and I don't expect a large bump in the name.

I would think you named her after the musical, which you did... since that is where the name originated from, so whatever. But please don't spell it with a z. It's already a unique name it doesn't need to be youneek too.

From what I understand, the name existed before the musical was written as a pet name for Nicole.

I understand, and agree, that some spellings can get out of hand and distasteful, but I really don't think that the z is "youneek". I also like the sound of a z instead of a soft s when pronouncing it, so it serves a phonetic purpose.

"As a real given name, Cosette is more probably a variant of Cozette, which is an old pet form of Nicole."

I read this before in a French name book years ago too.

The s in Cosette is pronounced as a hard sound similar to a z when the name is pronounced correctly in French. The z in unnecessary and IMO looks like you misspelled the name. Perhaps it depends on where you live.

I agree with this. I would definitely think you named her after the book/musical and that you misspelled it, whether for phonetic purposes or not. I don't think it will become popular.

Les Mis has been around for a long time. Many stage shows and this is not the first movie.  If it didn't get trendy any other time, it probably won't this time.

I say if you like it, use it!

I'm going to predict that Cosette will rise in popularity this year. I don't see it entering the top 50, and probably not the top 100, but I think it will have a quick rise. My reasoning is that parents today are actively looking for pretty and unique names. When the musical came out on Broadway parents weren't as concerned with naming their child a unique name. Today everyone is trying to find a unique name and I think the musical will draw attention to this pretty and unique name.

I also suggest you stick with the correct spelling. I hate Cozette and I hate Corrine - it's Corinne. I see the Corrine spelling here a lot and it makes me gag. I don't understand why people give their children French names if they are going to misspell them.

I really love the name, and I wasthisclose choosing it for my dds middle name. I love the play, and so it would have been after that. I decided on Collett instead as it is my moms maiden name... Anyways, I do not see it becoming overly popular. The play has been popular and out touring for more than 15 years. I would spell it correctly, though. The z makes it seem like you do not know the correct spelling. And they are pronounced the same...

OhBenji:
Is Cosette/Cozette even a name?

Upon reading the comments on Behindthename - not the most reliable, admittedly - I've learned that the background on Cosette is actually really murky.

Some say Hugo came up with it from the word chosette, which means "little thing."  Cosette wasn't even her given name in the novel; it was Euphrasie and she was nicknamed Cosette by Fantine.

Others say it was derived from Colette, which is a variant on Nicole, hence where the nickname for Nicole origin came from.

The only thing I learned from reading this is that no one really knows :-) Oh, and that I should read the book.  But, then - the book is always better and more interesting than a play or a movie!

To be honest, I would think you came up with your own creative spelling for Cosette, which I do only associate with Le Mis.

I would absolutely assume you named her after the Les Mis character. And I also strongly encourage you to not misspell it by putting in a 'z'.

That said, I like the name Cosette a lot and don't think it will become too popular.

I've always loved the name Cosette because of the book but would never actually use it except for a pet since there are so many other names out there to use. So, no, I don't think it will become popular. And you'll never have any worries about Cozette becoming popular since it is a totally different name.

What about Collette?

Oh, I would. My husband's name is Jeffrey (Jeff) and his two best friends growing up were Jeff Smith and Jeff Fletcher. That would bother me if that happened to one of my children. Also, I feel like a name should set an individual apart, not blend in with the crowd. I like the name Isabella, but with sooo many people naming their girls Isabella (or Bell, or Bella, or Ella, or Isabel, etc.) it's beginning to lose it's charm - for me.

Of course this is 100% my personal preference. I don't judge anyone else for naming their children popular names.
