Thoughts on Matilda?

Just curious on everyone's thoughts on Matilda?

I came across the name yesturday and I don't hear it very often at all.  Just thought i'd throw it out there and get some thoughts 'in general' about the name.

Love seeing different names on this board!

I like it. there was an English princess or queen from the Middle Ages named Matilda. it's not very common but I'm hearing it a little more lately.

I love it!

I associate it mostly with the book 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl and the song 'Waltzing Matilda' by Tom Waits. I live in Belgium and the crown princess is called Mathilde.

I really like it too.  I remains around the 800-900 range pretty consistantly.  Back in the 1880'2it was in the 100 range, but that was it's peak.

It's different and it is very vintage. 

But I dont know if i like the NN's of "Mattie" or "Tilly".  I kind of do...but unsure of the NN's with it.

I was thinking about this name the other day.... It's cute if you have a short LN.

My biggest turnoff to this name are the NNs. Tillie is Meh. and I hate that there is an overabundant amount Mattie/Maddies.

Thanks!  We are pretty set on Magnolia Jane but Matilda Jane has a good ring to it too....Hhhhmmm, will have to debate on this a little bit before I bring it up to DH!

I like it, and DH's ggma is Mathilde, so it is on our list.

As pp noted, Mattie is a potential drawback (esp. w/ DD Molly), but I like Tilly or Tilsy.

I think it's nice. It kind of reminds me of the movie Matilda, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I love it. I had a great aunt Matilda (Tillie). I also think the nn Millie could work, if you're into nicknames.

I really like it. It would have been on our girl list but we're having a boy and DH's name is Matt. I love the nn Tillie.
dx homozygous for 3 thrombophilias, poor egg quality, and most likely autoimmune problem. Anything I'm missing?

Matilda Jane was on our list but I cannot stand the Matilda Jane clothing company. They are kids clothes that look like they were made by a circus clown. It's big in my area, and I didn't want everyone to say "like the clothes?" When they heard her name. The NN didn't bother me because I would have just set everyone straight from the beginning not to give her a NN. However, once she is in school she could choose to have a nickname without my say anyway. Overall, I really like the name!

My older sisters name is Matilda and my family calls her Tilly. I love her name and she always gets compliments. :

I like Matilda but do not like the nn Mattie so it kind of keeps it off the table for me - also, H says no way :) 

I think it is refreshing and underused.

Really like it a lot! I think Tilly is a cute NN, but it doesn't necessarily need a NN. I think Matilda is a popular baby name in Australia.

Really like it!  Natalie Portman played a character named Matilda in the movie "The Professional" when she was 9 or 10 years old back in the 90's and I've loved it ever since!
